Everyone hopes the hazards of winter driving, cold, snow and ice are gone until the fall. But warmer weather brings new hazards and a need for other types of awareness when traveling. The Polk County Toward Zero Deaths Coalition and their partners, Polk County Public Health and the Polk County Wellness Coalition want to remind drivers to be aware of motorcycles this spring and summer.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration motorcycle accidents often occur when a motorist violates a motorcyclist’s right of way. Often this is because a driver doesn’t see the motorcycle in time or at all which is why it’s important to be aware of motorcycles explains Polk County Sheriff Jim Tadman. “On behalf of the Polk County Toward Zero Deaths Coalition I would like to put out some reminders that spring is coming,” said Tadman. “We’re going to start seeing some warmer weather and have some reminders about motorcycle awareness. About half of all motorcycles crashes involve another vehicle and in many crashes, the driver didn’t see the motorcycle or didn’t see the rider until it was too late.”
Using your mirrors and looking over your shoulders in one way to increase the likelihood you see a motorcycle. Tadman says it’s best to look twice to save a life. “Just some reminders to look twice for motorcycles before crossing traffic,” said Tadman. “Looking twice may save a life. Allow a minimum of three seconds of space when following a motorcycle. Motorcycles can be easily hidden. Look for a helmet above, tires or a shadow alongside a vehicle. And if you are also a passenger please help that driver look for motorcycles.”
It’s also important to note that motorcycle turn signals don’t typically shut off automatically, so always wait to see if the rider is moving over or turning if the bike’s signal is flashing. Allow plenty of space for a motorcyclist, don’t cut them over so they have the proper amount of time to react and use your turn signals so the riders know what to expect.
