TRISTAN SUNDQUIST WINS CROOKSTON DISTRICT SPELLING BEE, ADVANCES TO REGIONAL BEE

Tristan Sundquist, a sixth-grader at Highland Elementary won the annual Crookston District Spelling Bee and will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in Thief River Falls on February 5. Sundquist said his first word was pretty easy and helped him overcome his nervousness.  “At first when I got up there, I was a bit nervous, but I didn’t want to give up,” said Sundquist.  “They asked me my first word, it was actually pretty easy, and I got it right.  As we went through the rounds some players got out.  I never got anything wrong and then it was the final two with me and a fifth-grader.  The fifth-grader got it wrong and so it was the final round if I answered right and I got it right.”

Sundquist won the spelling bee on the ‘pamphlet’, which he said he nearly spelled incorrectly.  “My last word was, pamphlet, and I almost spelled it wrong,” said Sundquist.  “But then I went through another idea to spell it and it turns out that one was right.  That is how I won.”

Sundquist is the son of Heidi and Dan Sundquist.  Watch a video of Sundquist spelling the final word here
