The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Club Hockey team got behind early and came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Williston State Tetons in a game played at the Crookston Sports Center in Crookston.
First Period
The first period was a back-and-forth affair. The two teams would feel each other out through about the first five or so minutes. Williston State would strike first at 6:51 of the first period on a goal from Fox Dodds, with the assist of Eric Moran.
Much of the rest of the first period would be played between the blue lines. The Golden Eagles would get nine shots on goal, while the Tetons would get seven. WSC would take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Second Period
The second period would be a good period for Golden Eagle goalie Jake Sumner (Fr., G, Alta Loma, Calif.). The freshman would make a huge stop on a Dodds penalty shot to keep the maroon and gold within a goal. The Tetons would continue to keep up the pressure and would eventually strike once again on a goal from Cameron Maycock at exactly the 11-minute mark of the second period.
Minnesota Crookston would have several opportunities, including a Cam Olstad (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) shot from the left circle that rang off the post. UMC had 10 shots on goal, but still didn’t find the back of the net through two periods of play.
Third Period
The Golden Eagles got on the board at the 5:21 mark of the third period, with a goal from one of the Crookston natives on the team when Ty Hamre (Fr., D/F, Crookston) scored to get within a 2-1 deficit. UMC had two power-play chances, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Williston State added an insurance goal late in the game while short-handed for a 3-1 lead and held on to win the game by the same score.
UMC drops to 2-2-0 on the season, while Williston State improves to 8-13-0 on the season. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
