UMC Athletics hires new Women’s Soccer coach

The University of Minnesota Crookston announced the hiring of Danny Burstein as head women’s soccer coach. Burstein most recently served as an assistant coach at the University of Nevada in 2024.

“We are very excited to announce Danny as our head soccer coach,” said Director of Athletics Stephanie Helgeson. “Danny has wide-ranging experiences as an assistant and head coach at various levels that I think will provide a great base for him as he hits the ground running at Minnesota Crookston. He understands the area after his time at UND, and we are excited to see his leadership of the Golden Eagle soccer program.”

In one season at Nevada, Burstein helped the Wolfpack to a 6-13-2 mark, with a 4-6-2 record in the Mountain West. In 2024, he helped coach Emily Rich to a First Team All-Mountain West nod, her fourth-straight postseason honor. In addition, Burstein aided the Wolfpack in the classroom, as the team had five student-athletes named to the CSC Academic All-District squad.
“I’m excited for this opportunity to help take the Minnesota Crookston soccer program in a new direction,” Burstein stated. “I’m grateful for Stephanie Helgeson and the search committee for trusting me with the responsibility of leading the fantastic young women in this program and giving me the chance to be part of the Minnesota Crookston community. It is important to me that I be part of an institution with a supportive environment and values that align with my own, and that was evident when I had the chance to be on campus. I can’t wait to hit the ground running as we build a competitive program that helps develop the student-athletes both on and off the field.”

Prior to his season at Nevada, Burstein spent three seasons at the University of North Dakota, the last as associate head coach. He helped the team improve to 7-9-4 in 2022 and a berth in the Summit League Championship for the first time in four years. Burstein worked primarily with the goalkeepers and forwards, where he coached goalkeeper Madi Livingston to back-to-back All-Summit League honors. Under his guidance, Livingston ended her career as the single-season and career shutouts leader. Burstein also coached Amy Loeffler to the highest scoring output for UND since 2018, with eight goals and 18 points. Loeffler led the Summit League in conference goals scored. In total, Burstein coached six different players to Summit League honors during his time in Grand Forks.

Before his arrival at UND, Burstein was the head men’s soccer coach at the University of Providence in Great Falls, Mont., during the 2020-21 season. He led UP to a 3-3-2 mark during the pandemic-ridden season. Burstein coached Manu Garcia and George Almeida to First Team All-Conference honors in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, a first in program history.

He was an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at Adams State in 2019, serving as the goalkeeper’s coach for the women’s team, improving the team’s goals allowed by a margin of 18. Burstein served as an assistant at the University of Providence during the 2018 campaign, helping the Argos to a Cascade Conference Tournament berth.

In addition to his position with the University of Providence, Burstein worked with Montana Rush as head coach for the U-15 Girls and U-19 Boys and coached for the Montana ODP program. He led his U-19 Boys team to the 2018 State Cup title. Burstein owns an extensive high school and club coaching resume, spending four seasons at St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club and Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (MICDS).

Burstein completed his bachelor’s degree at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., where he was an undergraduate coach and student manager for the Judges. Burstein earned his Master of Science in Sports Management from Minot State University in 2024. He holds both the Advanced National Diploma and the Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma from United Soccer Coaches (NSCAA) and a USSF C License.
