UMC Baseball falls in first round of NSIC Tournament to Augustana

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle baseball team led most of the way, but the Augustana Vikings stormed back to score three runs in the eighth, leading to a 4-2 win over UMC in the first round of the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

FIRST INNING
Both teams would go down in order in the 1st inning.

SECOND INNING
In the 2nd, UMC looked to take the lead. Americo Sculati (Jr. Golden Valley) doubled and Aaron Wensloff (Soph. Roseau) singled. Kobe Senn (Sr. Fargo, ND) grounded into a double play and Sculati scored, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Augustana looked to answer back immediately, getting two on with one out. Isaac Wensloff (Jr. Roseau), however, was up to the task, as he induced groundouts, one to first and one to short, to end the inning, leaving the two Augustana runners stranded.

THIRD INNING
Ashton Michek struck out all three UMC batters faced in the third.
Augustana got a 2-out single from Carter Heinsch, but Isaac Wensloff got a strikeout, a groundout and a flyout to end the inning with no threat.

FOURTH INNING
Josh Dykhoff (Jr. Wadena) would be hit by a pitch in the 4th inning, but the rest of the UMC batters in the inning would go down quietly, stranding Dykhoff at first.
In the bottom of the 4th, after two quick outs, Augustana looked to rally with a single and a walk to start a threat. But, just like before, Isaac Wensloff continued to get clutch outs, as Kade Eikmeier struck out to end the inning, stranding more Viking baserunners.

FIFTH INNING
As the fifth inning got underway, the Golden Eagles continued to threaten an expansion of the lead. Senn would lead off with a single, but he would then be picked off. Connor Bushbaum (Jr. Saginaw) singled, and moved to third on a throwing error and a wild pitch. The next batters were retired.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Augustana got a single and a walk to put runners at second and first. After a flyout put runners on the corners, Isaac Wensloff was able to get out of the jam, getting a foulout to end the inning

SIXTH INNING
The Golden Eagles first two batters were retired. Dykhoff and Sculati walked before an Aaron Wensloff single to load the bases. The next batter struck out and the Golden Eagle threat ended with no runs scored.
After a walk, Isaac Wensloff was pulled with one out and Isaac Roers (Jr. Stacy) came in, but gave up the game-tying single to pinch hitter Sam Siegel to tie the game at 1. Roers would then get two groundouts to end the inning.

SEVENTH INNING
UMC had the bases loaded with two outs in the 6th and came up empty, but after a Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) single, a Kyler Miller (Fresh. Grand Rapids) single and a Sawyer Satrom (Sr. Portland, ND) walk, the bases were loaded with two outs once again. On a 1-1 count, Harrison Blum threw a wild pitch, scoring Wensloff to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead. The next batter grounded out.
Augustana would go down in order in the 7th inning.

EIGHTH INNING
Wth one out, UMC got back-to-back walks from Aaron Wensloff and pinch hitter Brock Larsen (Jr. Blaine). The next two batters struck out and the threat was over without a run scored.
In the home half, Jason Axelberg led off with a double. A sac bunt fielder’s choice put runners on the corners. Augustana would then score two runs on back-to-back safety squeeze attempts, giving the Vikings a 3-2 lead. Then, with two outs, a flyball to right was dropped by Conor Bushbaum, scoring the third run of the inning, giving Augustana a 4-2 lead heading into the 9th.

NINTH INNING
Miller led off the 9th inning with a walk, but Dylan Debilzen (Fres. Parkers Prairie) would then ground into a double play. UMC would then get runners on the corners, but the next batter struck out swinging, ending the game with a 4-2 Augustana win.

UMC falls to 23-28 on the year and will play Minnesota Duluth on Thursday at noon in a loser out game. Augustana improves to 37-14 and will play Wayne State on Thursday.
