The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team pulled off another 13-0 win over Saint John’s University at the Crookston Sports Center Saturday afternoon.
FIRST PERIOD
UMC won the opening faceoff, but the Johnnies fired the first three shots. All of them were saved, and UMC began to roll from there. The Golden Eagles struck first with a goal from Tyler Lorenz at the 4:21 mark. Jackson Dodds scored next, with assists from Alexander Bailey and Tristian Morenault at the 6:30 mark. The next goal came two minutes later, as Mason Romfo put one through the net on a power play. When play resumed after the end of the penalty, Saint John’s would be penalized again. UMC would be called for slashing to make it a 4-on-4, but the Golden Eagles still put up a goal by Fox Dodds. UMC killed the shortened penalty following the goal, and benefitted from a third Saint John’s penalty at the 15:00 mark in the period. 20 seconds into the power play, Jackson Dodds scored his second goal to make it 5-0 for UMC. The penalties continued, with one getting called on UMC around the 16:00 mark. It made little difference, however, as Anthony Foster gave the Golden Eagles a short-handed goal to make it 6-0. Saint Johns ended the period with a man in the box, as one of the Johnnies was penalized at the 19:00 mark.
SECOND PERIOD
Goals came in bunches for UMC in the second period. They extended the lead to 7 in the final seconds of the power play that carried over from the first, as Alexander Bailey put the puck on the nylon. Ten seconds later, the Golden Eagles scored again as Mason Romfo put in his second. Their third goal of the period came less than a minute later when Ben Hines scored to make it 9-0 for UMC. The Golden Eagles were penalized around the 3-minute mark but killed it off while allowing only three shots from the Johnnies. UMC was unable to capitalize on a Saint John’s penalty around the halfway point of the period, but they would rattle off a couple more quick goals in the 12th minute. First, Dylan Neubauer scored at 12:02, and Steven Muskranov followed with his first goal of the year at 12:54. The Golden Eagles would score two more back-to-back goals, with less than 20 seconds separating the shots that would extend the UMC lead to 13-0. Fox Dodds knocked one through at 16:28, followed by Mason Romfo at 16:48. UMC would see two shots to end the period but held up defensively to keep the score at 13-0.
THIRD PERIOD
Less than a minute into the period, UMC was penalized, but the Golden Eagles killed the penalty once again. Saint John’s was able to create chances on offense for seemingly the first time all weekend, as the Johnnies were able to pull off a few lengthy possessions. The Johnnies’ defense was firm, too, as they held a red-hot UMC offense scoreless for the final 20. Saint John’s could not find the back of the net, which kept the score at 13-0.
The Golden Eagles improve to 12-4-0 and will be off until their January 11th game against Dakota College. Saint John’s is now 2-10-0 on the season.
