UMC Club Hockey uses strong third period to sweep Minnesota-Duluth

The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team scored four goals in the third period to defeat the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 7-2 Saturday afternoon at the Crookston Sports Center.

FIRST PERIOD
The game started off with a bang, as UMD was able to score on their first shot of the game. Just 21 seconds into the contest, Conner Dewandeler hit from close range to make it 1-0 Bulldogs. The Bulldogs committed a penalty moments later, which started to shift momentum to the Golden Eagles. UMC fired several shots, but the Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize on the power play. UMC’s Aiden Morelli was penalized right after the Golden Eagle power play ended, and a Bulldog penalty a minute later made it 4 on 4 for awhile. When Morelli came out of the box, another UMD penalty gave the Golden Eagles about 20 seconds of 5 on 3. They were unable to score, but when it became 5-on-4, UMC was able to tie the game. Jackson Dodds found his way in front of the net to make it 1 each at 7:29. UMC scored again at the 12:45 mark, when Mason Romfo went unassisted to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. UMC was penalized late, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize. UMD would find the net to end the period, as Connor Cate made a shot to tie it at 2 in the final seconds of the period.

SECOND PERIOD
The second period was much slower than the first, but the intensity of a tie game began to mount on both sides. An early penalty on the Bulldogs gave the Golden Eagles offense a spark, but they were unable to score. UMC would be penalized at 3:22, followed by a UMD penalty at 4:55. Neither side was able to score on special teams, leaving it tied at 5:22. UMC dominated possession for most of the remainder of the period, but UMC goalkeeper Conner Nelson stood strong between the pipes. Defensively, UMC only allowed two shots, and goalie Tyler Swanson did not have to make a save. The Golden Eagles put a puck into the net at 17:38, but the go-ahead goal was wiped off the board due to offsides. UMC got it back with just six seconds left in the period, as Alexander Bailey scored on a quick pass from Anthony Foster to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

THIRD PERIOD
The penalties continued to add up as the period opened, as UMC’s Logan Syrup was called for tripping. The Golden Eagles killed the penalty, and scored moments later. Anthony Foster extended the lead on a breakaway, with an assist from Mason Romfo at 5:19. Fox Dodds scored a minute later on a one-timer to extend the UMC lead to 5-2. The Golden Eagles entered a power play at 8:21, but could not score. After the penalty, a scuffle broke out at center ice. UMD’s Trenton Veenendaal was sent to the box for tripping, and UMC’s Jackson Dodds was handed a major penalty for slashing,. UMC scored in the 4-on-4 by way of a Tyler Lorenz goal at 12:07, and they were able to kill the 5-on-3 they faced for the minutes after. UMC added an insurance score at 17:57 from Mason Romfo to make it 7-2, which would be the final score.

UMC is now 15-4 on the season, and will host St. Cloud State next weekend.
