UMC FOOTBALL THROWS 4 INTERCEPTIONS, FALLS TO MARY 44-15

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Football team threw four interceptions, one for a touchdown and lost to the University of Mary Marauders 44-15 in a Northern Sun Conference game in Bismarck, North Dakota.

FIRST QUARTER –
UMC started the game with a penalty before they ran their first play and started with a first and 15-yard play. Two plays later the Golden Eagles were forced to punt.
Mary started their drive at their own 47-yard line and had back to back plays 18 yard plays followed by a one-yard run to get the ball to the UMC 16 yard line. On the next play, Mary’s quarterback Avery Gould completed a 14-yard pass down to the two-yard line and Bryan Lumsden (Soph. Clearmont, FL) scored on a two-yard run. After the extra point kick, Mary led 7-0 with less than three minutes into the game. UMC’s second offensive series started well with a first down, but on the sixth play of the drive a Jalin Scott pass was intercepted by Mary’s Paul Guptill for a 39-yard return for a touchdown and after the extra point the Marauders led 14-0 with 9:30 left in the opening quarter.
Mary started the final drive of the quarter with the ball at their own 29-yard line with 1:25 left. Mary’s first play was an 11-yard run, followed by a 23-yard run. The third play of the series was a 41-yard pass from Gould to Luke Little down to the UMC seven-yard line. A couple of plays later, Mary’s Isaiah Hilliard scored on a one-yard run and after the extra point kick, the Marauders led 21-0 with seven seconds left in the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER –
UMC couldn’t sustain a drive in their first drive of the quarter, but Mary responded with an impressive 14 play 61 yard drive that stalled at the 29 yard line and Brody Riggs had an impressive 39 yard field goal kick into the 25 miles per hour wind to give the Marauders a 24-0 lead with 7:36 left in the half.
A couple of possessions later, Mary had a three and out and was forced to punt into the wind and after a 27-yard punt, UMC started the drive at the Mary 31 yard line. The Golden Eagles ran five plays and were going to settle for a field goal. When UMC’s kicker was run into on the field goal attempt and that gave the Golden Eagles a first down and two plays later they scored on a Jalin Scott three-yard run for the first UMC rushing touchdown of the season. After the extra point kick, UMC trailed 24-7 going into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER –
Mary started the second half with the ball and moved the ball seven yards with their first two plays of the drive before they had three straight big plays with a 29 yard pass, a run for 25 yards before Bryan Lumsden carried the ball for a 14 yard touchdown to cap a five-play 75 yard drive that took a little over two minutes and the Marauders led 31-7.
UMC answered with an 11 play 75-yard drive that was capped a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jalin Scott to Kyler Banks and after a two-point conversion pass from Scott to Josh Lanasa, the Golden Eagles trailed 31-15 with 9:04 left in the quarter. Neither team could get a sustained drive going longer than five or six plays the rest of the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER –
Mary took advantage of an interception and added a field goal on their first drive of the quarter when Brody Riggs kicked a 38 yarder with 11:55 left in the game for a 34-15 lead.
UMC turned the ball over on downs and Mary had another short field and Riggs kicked a 24-yard field goal for a 37-14 lead with less than five minutes to go in the season.
UMC got the ball inside the red zone again and threw another interception that killed a seven-play 66-yard drive and Mary had the ball back just shy of midfield after a lengthy return. Mary ran five plays that spanned 53 yards in 64 seconds and scored on a 15 yard Lumsden run for a 44-15 lead with 1:32 left. UMC threw another interception, the fourth of the game, in the final minute and Mary took a knee to win the game 44-15.

The Golden Eagles will lose the following seniors – Will Cross, Jalin Scott, Josh Lanasa, LaDerek McCray, Jonattan Mudd, Shonte Smith, Emmitt Stevens, Logan Huso, Trevor Long, Jr., Austin Brown, and Joe Warner.

UMC ends the season with a 0-11 record. Mary ends the season with a 2-9 record.
