UMC Hockey takes down Jamestown in Sunday matinee

The University of Minnesota-Crookston men’s club hockey team had no problems with the Jamestown Jimmies on Sunday afternoon as they cruised to an 8-3 victory, their second win over the Jimmies in as many days.

FIRST PERIOD
UMC came out on fire to start the game, as Braden Van De Kraats scored just 55 seconds into the game to put the Golden Eagles up 1-09. That didn;t seem to be enough for him, though, as he scored again less than 23 minutes later to put UMC up 2-0. That score became 3-0 just 22 seconds later as Mason Romfo banged one in off the crossbar. After the Jimmies called timeout, UMC immediately scored again to make it 4-0, prompting a goalie change. The Jimmies would then get on the board, getting a great shot from Cooper Malkowski to cut the lead down to 4-1. All 5 goals to this stage were scored in the first 7 minutes, but the final goal of the period would be scored in the final minute, as Anthony Foster got in on the fun, beating new UJJ goaltender Ethan Haglund to give the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead at the end of the 1st period.

SECOND PERIOD
In the second period, Jamestown shaped up and began to play a lot better. They did a much better job controlling the puck, preventing UMC from getting many shots on goal. However, the UMC defense was doing the same thing, and the vast majority of the second period went by with little action. UMC netminder Tyler Swanson did a great job stopping everything that was in front of him, but that came to an end at 15:27, when Jaxon Hill capitalized on a turnover to cut the lead down to 5-2. Then, the Jimmies added another one with 2 minutes to go, as Brooks Roaldson cashed in to cut the lead down to 5-3. That score would stand heading into the 3rd period, but the Jimmies went in with all the momentum.

THIRD PERIOD
Unfortunately for Jamestown, the momentum did not stick around in the 3rd period. The Golden Eagles found their mojo from the first period, and were able to cash in with Fox Dodds in the 6th minute of the second period to take a 6-3 lead. From there, frustration began to overcome the Jimmies, and they committed a couple penalties after the whistle. The second one resulted in a power play goal from Tyler Lorenz, making it 7-3 Golden Eagles. Lorenz would score a second one with 2 minutes left to put the nail in the coffin, and the Golden Eagles were able to pull away for an 8-3 win.

UMC improves to 16-2 on the season, while Jamestown is now 13-6.
