NORTHERN STATE USES LATE FIRST HALF RUN TO BE UMC MEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team fell 81-64 to Northern State Saturday, February 12 at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves went on a 13-0 scoring run at the end of the first half to catapult the victory.

The Golden Eagles were led by Nathaniel Powell (So., F/C, Nottingham, England) with 16 points and five boards. Brian Sitzmann (Sr., G, Savage, Minn.) added 11 points and five rebounds. Uzo Dibiamaka (So., G, Adelaide, South Australia) and Ethan Channel (Jr., G, Beaverton, Ore.) each added eight points apiece.

The Golden Eagles shot 24-of-64 for the game for 37.5 percent. They were 7-of-18 from beyond the arc for 38.9 percent, and 9-of-15 from the line for 60.0 percent.

Northern State was lifted by 19 points and seven rebounds from Cole Bergan. Sam Masten added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Jackson Moni finished with 15 points and five boards.

The Wolves shot 28-of-60 from the field for 46.7 percent. They were 7-of-27 from beyond the arc for 25.9 percent. Northern State went 18-of-21 from the foul line for 85.7 percent. They also won the rebounding edge 35-33.

Northern State got out to a 3-0 lead on a Moni three-pointer. The two teams would be knotted up 6-6 after Powell hit a basket for the Golden Eagles. After a defensive stop, Sitzmann sank a three-pointer to give Minnesota Crookston the 9-6 lead with 15:05 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 13-6 with a Dibiamaka basket. Minnesota Crookston pushed their lead to 17-8 on a Sitzmann jumper. Northern State was able to close within 21-18, using a 10-3 run, on a pair of Moni free throws.  The Wolves pulled within one (23-22) on a Bergan triple. Northern State moved into a 26-23 advantage on a pair of Bergan free throws. The Wolves pushed their lead to 32-23 on a Carter Lancaster put-back with 1:21 left in the first half. Northern State went into the locker room up 34-25 after a Jordan Belka jumper.

Northern State extended their lead early in the second half to 38-26 after a pair of Bergan free throws. The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to 38-29 after Sitzmann drained a three-pointer. The Wolves widened the gap to 45-31 as Masten hit an old-fashioned three-point play with 16:17 left in the game. Northern State continued their second half run, pushing their lead to 52-34 after Moni hit a three-pointer. Another Moni triple extended the advantage for the Wolves to 57-34 with 13:35 remaining in the game. Sitzmann pulled the Golden Eagles back within 20 after hitting a trey. Northern State widened their gap out to 68-43 following a Kobe Busch three-pointer.  The Golden Eagles were able to get the deficit back down to 20 (72-52) after Ron Kirk, Jr.  (Fr., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) hit a triple with just over four minutes remaining in the game. A Sam Tiley (Jr., G/F, Fort Collins, Colo.) basket got the deficit down to 74-56 with just over three minutes left in the game.  Northern State closed out the game to pick up an 81-64 victory.

UMC drops to 8-16 (5-13 NSIC) and will travel to Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday. Northern State improved to 17-11 (11-9 NSIC) with the victory.
