The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball fell victim to a huge scoring run in the second half, as they lost to the UMary Marauders 86-75.
FIRST HALF –
UMary won the opening tip, but it was UMC to score first off an Andrew Stokes jumper. This would start a 5 minute scoring run for the Golden Eagles, in which they outscored the Marauders 11-3. Ty Johnson wound end the run for UMary with a big 3, and swing momentum back to the Marauders. UMary cut the lead to 2 with 11:30 to go in the half, as a Gunner Swanson jumper made it 18-16. Chandler Meeks hit a strong layup and a free throw to add to UMC’s lead, but UMary continued to answer. UMary took its first lead by way of an Xavier Lewis layup to make it 22-21. The teams continued to trade 2s until a Reid Grant jumper helped put UMC back ahead 28-27. UMC continued to hold onto the lead, but it was UMary keeping it within a possession. UMary tied it at 36 with 2 minutes left, with UMC’s Landon Dimler making a three to give the Golden Eagles the lead again 10 seconds later. Tamarren Hanson of UMary tied it again with a three of his own with 50 seconds left, and neither team could score again to break the tie before time expired.
SECOND HALF –
Andrew Stokes opened up the second half scoring with just 30 seconds gone, as he gave UMC a 41-39 lead. Moments later, UMary’sTy Rodgers hit two free throws to tie it again at 41. Those were the first of six straight Marauder points, but a Jordan Mitchell dunk ended the run and cut the lead back to 2. Mitchell tied it a couple of minutes later for UMC. The teams continued to exchange shots while keeping the game within one possession. At the 12:00 mark, Rich Ashu made a layup to spark another UMary run. The Marauders would go on a 10-0 run over the next several minutes to make it 60-53, forcing UMC to burn a timeout. Out of the break, UMary put up four more in a row while holding the Golden Eagles to nothing. UMC quickly called another timeout in an effort to slow the Marauder momentum. UMC was unable to land a shot, and UMary drew fouls and created big defensive plays to hold onto their lead. Micah Garrett finally ended the Marauder scoring run at 18 points, as he made a shot to make it 68-55. UMary answered back moments later. Shots from Jordan Mitchell and Reid Grant made it a 14 point game with 4:21 to go. Around the 3:00 mark, a UMary dunk was answered with threes from Christian Bowen-Webb and Reed Grant to make it 79-65. A Jordan Mitchell block on the ensuing possession led to a Micah Garrett layup to cut the lead down to 12. UMC then had to start giving fouls, but the Golden Eagles could not score enough to recover from UMary’s consistent free throw shooting in the final minutes. The Marauders would hold on to win 86-75.
UMC is now 2-8 on the season and will play Northland State next weekend.
