The University of Mary seemed to have an answer for every University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball run as they won 73-60 at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.
FIRST HALF
UMC scored first with a Leonard Dixon (Jr. Damascus, Org) basket, but Mary answered with back-to-back three-pointers for a 6-2 lead. The teams exchanged points for the next eight minutes and UMC closed the gap to three points after five straight points from Ibu Jassey-Demba (Sr. England) to get within a 17-14 deficit. Mary responded with back-to-back three-pointers to build a 23-14 lead. The teams played even the rest of the way and the Marauders led 37-28 at the half.
SECOND HALF
Both teams scored five points each in the first three minutes with UMC’s Josh Dilling (Fresh. Oshkosh, Wis) scoring on a layup and Dixon buried a three-pointer and Mary led 42-33. Over the next 10 minutes, Mary would slowly build a 58-43 lead with 8:18 remaining. UMC’s Brian Sitzmann (Jr. Savage) made a three-pointer, but Mary responded with two layups and a dunk to take a 64-46 lead with five minutes left in the game. The Golden Eagles’ answered in a big way, with Sitzmann making two free throws, Dilling made a jump shot, and Jassey-Demba made a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run to bring UMC within a 64-53 deficit with three minutes left in the game. Mary was able to hold off the Golden Eagle comeback attempt and held on for a 73-60 victory.
UMC drops to 1-7 in the NSIC North and 2-8 overall and will travel to Minnesota Duluth next weekend. Mary improves to 4-4 in the NSIC North and 4-6 overall.
