DULUTH USES STRONG SECOND HALF TO BEAT UMC MEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of Minnesota Crookston played a great first half and led by two at the break, but the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs used a strong second half to pull away for an 81-65 victory in Romano Gymnasium in Duluth.

FIRST HALF
UMC had a good start to the game with an 8-4 run behind back-to-back three-pointers from Josh Dilling (Fresh. Oshkosh, Wis) and Ibu Jassey-Demba (Sr. England).  Duluth tied the game at eight before UMC got a layup from Leonard Dixon (Jr. Damascus, Org.) and a three-pointer from Brian Sitzmann (Jr. Savage) for a 13-8 lead over six minutes into the game. UMC built a 20-13 lead and had a 28-21 lead with 5:30 left in the half.  Duluth fought back and tied the game at 32, but UMC’s Sitzmann had a basket and Quintin Winterfeldt had a big dunk for a 36-32 lead.  Duluth beat the buzzer and got a layup at the end of the half and Crookston took a 36-34 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
The teams battled for the first four minutes and Crookston led 43-42, but Duluth picked up their play and went on an 11-2 run to take a 54-44 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.   UMC was able to get back within four points (60-56) with 8:14 to go, but Duluth dominated the rest of the half and pulled away for an 81-65 victory.

UMC drops to 1-8 in the NSIC North and 2-9 overall.  Duluth improves to 2-5 in the NSIC North and 3-5 overall.  The teams will play again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Duluth.
