UMC MEN’S HOCKEY USES LATE RALLY TO PICK UP WIN AT WILLISTON STATE COLLEGE

The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team picked up a 4-3 victory over Williston State College Saturday, December 11 at Pete Conlin, Sr. Arena in Williston, N.D. The victory was the first for the Golden Eagles over Williston State in five games since last season.

Minnesota Crookston scored three goals in the final nine minutes to upend the Tetons on their home ice. The Golden Eagles improved to 6-5-2 (2-2-2 WCCHA) with Saturday’s win. Williston State falls to 7-11 with the loss. Minnesota Crookston is ranked 18th in the Central Region, while Williston State is 11th in the West Region.

The Golden Eagles were propelled by Nikolai Rajala (Fr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) with two goals and an assist. Rajala leads UMN Crookston this season with 24 points (10 goals and 14 assists). Tyler Zahradka (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) added his team-leading 16th goal of the season, while Dylan Borseth (Jr., F, Williston, N.D.) scored his fourth goal of the season and his first against his former school, Williston State. Borseth also added an assist. Jackson Fuller (Fr., F, Bloomington, Minn.), Tristan Morneault (So., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick), Sam Baxter (Fr., D, Grafton, N.D.), Dylan Neubauer (Fr., F, Thompson, N.D.), and Logan Syrup (Fr., F, Park River, N.D.) all added assists on the night.

Braden Schmitz (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) got the win in goal. Schmitz had 30 saves and allowed three goals on the night.

Williston State picked up goals from Jordan Skahill, Devonne Berry, and Alexander Bailey.

Riley Christinson started in goal for the Tetons and allowed four goals, with 34 saves.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first as Borseth scored with 15 seconds left in the first period off an assist from Rajala.

The Tetons knotted the game up 1-1 at the 4:59 mark in the second stanza when Skahill scored off assists from Isaac Ellingson and Jake Huska.

Williston State took the 2-1 lead 10:35 into the third period when Berry found the back of the net off assists from Carson Arndt. The Golden Eagles responded with a goal just over a minute later when Zahradka launched one between the pipes off assists from Fuller and Morneault.

UMN Crookston would build off their momentum as they scored with just under five minutes remaining when Rajala scored off assists from Borseth and Baxter. Minnesota Crookston quickly added a fourth goal just 29 seconds later when Rajala scored again off assists from Neubauer and Syrup.

Williston State would look to make a late comeback as Bailey scored off an assist from Huska to trim the deficit to 4-3. However, the Tetons were unable to find the equalizer as the Golden Eagles won 4-3.

Minnesota Crookston will finish up the weekend at Williston State College Sunday, December 12 at 2 p.m. in Williston, N.D.
