UMC names Megan Bell interim associate vice chancellor

The University of Minnesota Crookston has named Megan Bell, Ph.D. as its interim associate vice chancellor following the retirement of Shawn Boyne, J.D., Ph.D. Bell will act as the interim associate vice chancellor for the Business, Arts, and Education (BAE) division, which comprises the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education Department, and the Business Department, as well as the Early Childhood Development Center.

Bell started teaching at U of M Crookston in 2004, serving as the communication program lead for the past several years. Recently, she’s been teaching courses in News and Social Media Communication, Intercultural Communication, Visual Communication, Publication Design and Management, among others.

“Dr. Bell replaces retiring Associate Vice Chancellor Shawn Boyne, and this transition ensures the BAE Division will continue to be in capable hands,” said Senior Vice Chancellor Rosemary Johnsen, Ph.D. “Dr. Bell is a senior member of the faculty with a track record of leadership in curricular development, advances in online teaching, and shared governance structures. I am delighted that she agreed to serve as AVC, and I look forward to her joining the academic affairs administrative team as we collaborate on goals and strategic planning.”
In her role as interim associate vice chancellor, Bell will provide leadership to the division’s faculty, academic programs, and staff. Reporting directly to the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, the associate vice chancellor collaborates and strategizes with the Academic Affairs Council and is a member of the Chancellor’s senior leadership team. The associate vice chancellor also assists with policy implementation, faculty hiring and evaluation, and encourages faculty development efforts.

Bell has had a connection with the Crookston campus since the 1940s as her grandfather, Russell Tollefson, graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture, an agricultural high school that operated on campus from 1906-1968. Bell herself graduated from U of M Crookston in 2002 with her bachelor’s degree majoring in scientific and technical communication. She earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of North Dakota in communication and public discourse.

“I have enjoyed working at the University for more than 20 years and look forward to advancing the goals of the Business, Arts, and Education division in this new capacity,” shared Bell.
