UMC SOCCER SHUTOUT BY AUGUSTANA

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s soccer team worked hard against the NSIC’s top team coming into Friday, but ultimately fell 3-0 to Augustana University. The Golden Eagles created scoring opportunities with three shots on goal and six shots, and also had several opportunities that didn’t end with shots. Augustana used two goals in the first half and one in the second stanza to earn a 3-0 win.

The Golden Eagles have continued to improve and have played two of their better games of the season in their last two against two of the top programs in the NSIC in Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-11 (0-10 NSIC) with Friday’s loss. Augustana improves to 12-1-1 (10-0-1 NSIC) with the victory.

The Golden Eagles were led by Maggie Peterson (Jr., F, Princeton, Minn.) with three shots and two shots on goal. Vanessa Shelton (Jr., MF, Tacoma, Wash.) chipped in a shot on goal. Kiya Gere (So., D, Vancouver, Wash.) and Latafale Niumeitolu (Fr., MF, Sandy, Utah) also added shots.
Augustana finished with 48 shots but only 20 were on goal, with many of their opportunities coming from distance. Peyton Stenzel led the team with six shots and three shots on goal. Kenzie Geiger added three shots and two shots on goal. Claire Dahm had four shots and two shots on goal, while Jensen Froehlich had four shots with three shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles had the first opportunity of the game as they went right toward the net, but Peterson’s chance was saved in the fourth minute.

The Vikings got on the board in the sixth minute when Stenzel had a shot saved and Alexis Legg followed it up with a goal to put Augustana ahead 1-0. Stenzel got the assist on the tally.

Minnesota Crookston had their first shot on goal in 16th minute as Shelton put a chance on frame.

Augustana added a goal in the 34th minute when Geiger put away a ball off a cross from Josie Arduser to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Golden Eagles had a chance in the 59th minute in the second half as Peterson had a shot on goal, put away by Meghan Kuntz.

Minnesota Crookston generated a corner kick in the 67th minute, but Niumeitolu’s header went wide off the chance.

The Vikings added a goal in the 78th minute as Bailey McCullough found Dahm for the goal to move the advantage to 3-0.

The Golden Eagles won another corner in the 79th minute, this time Gere’s shot went wide.

Augustana would hang on for the 3-0 victory.

Athena DiMario Done (Jr., GK, Windsor, Ontario) made her first start since Oct. 6 as she returned from injury. DiMario Done made great saves on the day as she had 17 saves on the game. DiMario Done moved past Athena Mussenden for sixth all-time in saves. DiMario Done needs just 21 saves to surpass her former teammate Olivia Puttin for fifth all-time.

Minnesota Crookston remains at home at the Minnesota Crookston Soccer Field as they host Wayne State College Sun., Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
