UMC SOFTBALL COMMITS 10 ERRORS IN TWO LOSSES TO UPPER IOWA

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball team committed 10 errors in two games and it proved to be costly as they were swept by the Upper Iowa Peacocks 15-8 and 13-5 in a doubleheader played in Fayette, Iowa.

GAME ONE –
Upper Iowa led off the game reaching on a UMC error.  After a sacrifice bunt and a flyout, a run scored on a single and the Peacocks led 1-0. 

After a scoreless second inning, Upper Iowa started the third with a single before UMC committed the second error of the game.  The next batter singled to load the bases and a run scored on a fielders choice for a 2-0 lead.  The Peacocks followed with a single to score another run and added another run on a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead. 

UMC only had one hit in the first three innings and got a one-out rally going when Alina Avalos (Jr. Riverside, CA) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After a strikeout, Jordan Peterson (Sr. Lakeville) reached on an error and Avalos scored.  Dana Zarn (Jr. Winnipeg, MB) followed with a double to score another run to get within a 4-2 deficit. 

Upper Iowa blew the game open in the sixth inning when they scored six runs on six hits.  They started with back-to-back singles followed by a double to score a run.  The next batter hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead.  Upper Iowa took a 7-2 lead after a single and a few batters later they hit a three-run home run for a 10-2 lead.
UMC responded in the bottom of the inning with an Avalos single and  Peterson reached on an error to score a run.  Zarn hit a blast over the leftfield fence for a three-run home run and the Golden Eagles trailed 10-6.

In the top of the seventh inning, Upper Iowa broke the game open again by scoring five runs on three hits, including a home run, while taking advantage of three errors for a 15-6 lead. 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hannah Macias singled, Avalos singled to score a run and Shaelyn Grant (Soph. Grand Junction, CO) singled to score another run to get within a 15-8 deficit.  That would be as close as they would get and Upper Iowa held on for a 15-8 victory.

GAME TWO –
UMC pitcher Evie Stuck started the game on a great note, retiring the first three batters she faced.  In the bottom of the first inning, UMC started with a Hannah Macias double.  After a pop-out and a strike out, the Golden Eagles got a two-out rally going with a Grand double to score a run for a 1-0 lead.  Peterson followed with a single to score another run and the Golden Eagles had a 2-0 lead after the first inning. 

Upper Iowa started the second inning with back-to-back singles before a wild pitch allowed a run to score and the Peacocks trailed 2-1. 

In the bottom of the third inning a Peacock error proved to be costly as Avalos reached on an error, after back-to-back outs, Zarn doubled to score a run and the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead. 

In the top of the fourth inning, Upper Iowa took advantage of a UMC error as they tripled in a runner that reached on an error to get within a 3-2 deficit. After a walk, Upper Iowa singled in two more runs to take a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Upper Iowa led off with an out but had back-to-back walks followed by a triple that scored two runs for a 6-3 lead.  The next batter singled in a run for a 7-3 lead.  Upper Iowa followed with another single before the next batter reached on an error to score another run.  The next batter hit a three-run home run for an 11-3 lead.  With bases empty, Upper Iowa singled was hit by a pitch and after a strikeout for the second out of the inning, UMC committed another error to allow a run to score.  The next batter singled to score another run for a 13-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, UMC needed three runs to keep the game going.  The leadoff batter flew out, Zarn reached on an error and after an out, Alyssa Stillman pinch-hit and hit a two-run home run to get within a 13-5 deficit and that is as close as they would get as Upper Iowa won the game by the run-rule for a 13-5 victory.

UMC drops to 3-7 in the NSIC and 12-23 overall.  The Golden Eagles are scheduled to play a doubleheader at St. Cloud State on Tuesday.
