UMC SOFTBALL NO HIT TWICE IN LOSSES TO NORTHERN STATE

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball team was no-hit in a 1-0 loss in game one and no hit again in a 8-0 loss in a doubleheader with the Northern State Wolves in a Northern Sun conference game played in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

GAME ONE
Crookston had one of their two baserunners in the first inning when Hanna Macias (Jr. West Covina, CA) reached on an error before the next two batters struck out and the Golden Eagles were retired.

UMC’s pitcher Katie Humhej (Sr. Surrey, British Colombia) was solid in the circle and only gave up two hits in the first two innings.  In the bottom of the third inning, Northern State had a two-out rally with a double and a costly UMC error allowed a run to score and the Wolves took a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth innings, Northern State’s leadoff batter reached on an error and the next two batters singled to load the bases.  The next batter reached on a fielder’s choice as UMC got the first out of the inning at home plate.  The next two Northern State batters were retired and UMC got out of a big jam and trailed 1-0 after four innings.

UMC’s Leah Macias (Jr. West Covina, CA) joined her sister to become only the second Golden Eagle to reach first base in the game when she reached on an error and advanced to third base.  The next batter popped out on a bunt attempt and the third out came on a pop out and Northern State held on for a 1-0 lead and Meghan Anderson (Soph. Verona, Wis)) earned the no-hitter going seven innings while striking out 13 for the win in the circle.  UMC’s Humhej was the tough-luck loser in the circle going six innings, while scattering six hits and giving up one run.  Humhej struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

Northern State expanded their lead in the top of the fourth inning.  With two outs, Northern State had four singles in a row while scoring three runs for a 4-0 lead.

UMC finally had their first and only base runner of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Hannah Hatfield reached on an error, but the next two batters were retired and the Golden Eagles trailed 4-0.  In the bottom of the inning, Northern State tripled and singled to score a run for a 5-0 lead.  After a UMC pitching change, Northern State singled.  After a fly out for the second out of the inning, the next batter reached on an error and another run scored for a 6-0 lead.  The next Northern State batter singled to score two more runs for an 8-0 victory in five innings.
