UMC SOFTBALL PLAYS WELL BUT UMD IS BETTER, EARNS SWEEP OVER THE GOLDEN EAGLES

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Softball team lost twice on Wednesday afternoon to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Bulldogs. The Golden Eagles played well in Game 1 before falling 7-1, and couldn’t get the offense going in Game 2 losing 3-0. UMC was also honoring Hannah Macias (Sr. West Covina, CA.), Leah Macias (Sr. West Covina, CA.), Jordan Peterson (Sr. Lakeville, Minn.), Kamryn Frisk (Sr. Anchorage, AK.), and Alyssa Stillman (Jr. Hortonville, Wis.) as a part of Senior Day.

GAME 1 –
UMD got on the board first in the top of the first inning on a 2-out home run to go up 2-0. The Golden Eagles would get one back in the bottom of the frame. Jordan Peterson (Sr. Lakeville, Minn.) would hit a leadoff single, Alina Avalos (Jr. Riverside, CA.) would hit a single, and Shaelyn Grant (So. Grand Junction, Colo.) would hit a 2-out single to score Hanna Macias (Sr. West Covina, CA.) who reached earlier in the innings on a fielders choice. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles would only achieve one more hit the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs kept their 2-1 lead all the way until the top of the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles did have a great opportunity to score in the bottom of the fifth with runners on the corners, but a Peterson lineout would double off Leah Macias (Sr. West Covina, CA.) from first base. Kamryn Frisk (Sr. Anchorage, AK.) did an excellent job the entire game keeping a strong Bulldogs offense off the scoreboard, but it wasn’t going to be quite enough. UMD would finally get a runner in scoring position on a 1-out double in the top of the sixth and follow it up with a single to drive in a run and extend the lead 3-1.

Avalos would reach for UMC in the bottom of the sixth on a UMD error, but the Bulldogs would keep her on base and take a 3-1 lead into the final inning. From there. the Bulldogs put away UMC for good, scoring four insurance runs on four hits to go up 7-1. UMC would go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh giving UMD the 7-1 win in Game 1.

GAME TWO –
Game 2 once again featured great pitching performances from both teams, but UMD’s was a little better. The Golden Eagles could only amass two hits in the game, one from Peterson in the bottom of the fourth inning, and one from Grant in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Evie Stuck (Fr. Papillion, Neb.) got the start in the circle for UMC and pitched 5.1 innings without giving up an earned run. However, the Golden Eagles made three errors in the game and that was enough for the Bulldogs to capitalize.

UMD would get their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. After the Golden Eagles would get the first two hitters in the inning out, a UMC error and back-to-back singles from UMD would plate their first run giving them a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs would get the leadoff hitter on, and after another error from UMC, and back-to-back hit batters, UMD had stretched their lead to 2-0 and still had the bases loaded with just 1 out. A single would bring across another run, but UMC would do damage control and get out of the inning only down 3-0.

UMC would never make it interesting, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 win and the sweep over the Golden Eagles.

UMC falls to 14-35 on the season and 5-19 in NSIC play. They will immediately be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Bemidji State in the final home games of the year. Game 1 will get underway at 2:00 p.m. UMD improves to an impressive 35-12 overall and 20-6 in the NSIC.
