UMC SOFTBALL SWEPT BY CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) softball team lost a hard-fought game 7-5 in the first game and struggled in the second game and lost 14-4 to the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears in a game played in St. Paul in a Northern Sun Conference Double Header on Saturday afternoon.  

GAME ONE –
UMC got things going in the top of the first inning when Hannah Macias (Fresh. West Covina, CA) drew a four-pitch walk.  Malia Pula (Jr. Gilroy, CA) singled and Rocky Bjorge (Sr. Prior Lake) doubled to score the first run of the game for a 1-0 lead.
Concordia-St. Paul answered in the bottom of the inning by scoring three runs on three singles, a double, a hit batter and a walk for a 3-1 lead after the first inning.
In the top of the third inning Macias walked for the second time in the game, Pula singled again and Bjorge knocked in another run on a ground out and UMC trailed 3-2.  Maggie Morales tied the game with a rbi single for a 3-3 score.
UMC took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when Darian Pancirov (Fresh. Las Vegas, Nev) hit a solo home run for a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Concordia-St. Paul took the lead with a two-out rally with a triple and two singles for a 5-4 lead through four innings.
UMC tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Mikaela Rodriguez (Jr. Laveen, AZ) hit a solo home run and the game was tied at 5-5.
Concordia-St. Paul regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error, the next batter walked and the third batter of the inning singled to score a run and the Golden Bears added another run on a single later in the inning for a 7-5 lead going into the seventh inning.
UMC had runners at first and third base with one out, but the next two batters were retired and Concordia-St. Paul retired the next two batters for a 7-5 victory.

GAME TWO –
Concordia-St. Paul blew the game open in the bottom of the first inning with two home runs, two triples, two singles and a double to score six runs for a 6-0 lead after the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, Concordia-St. Paul added four more runs with a walk, back-to-back doubles and a three-run home run for a 10-0 lead through three innings.
UMC finally scored their first runs in the top of the fourth inning when Rocky Bjorge walked and Mikaela Rodriguez hit a two-run home run and the Golden Eagles trailed 10-2.  Concordia-St. Paul added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 11-2 lead.
UMC answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning with a single and four straight walks to get within an 11-4 deficit.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, Concordia-St. Paul started with a single, reached on an error and ended the game with a three-run home run for a 14-4 victory in five innings.

UMC drops to 13-35 overall and 2-22 in the NSIC and will travel to Minot State on Wednesday for a doubleheader to wrap up 10 road games in a row.  Concordia-St. Paul improves to 26-18 overall and 13-11 in the NSIC.
