UMC SOFTBALL SWEPT BY #1 RANKED AUGUSTANA

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball team lost to the Augustana Vikings in game one of a doubleheader on a hot day in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

GAME ONE –
UMC had a great start to the game.  Dana Zarn (Soph. Winnipeg, Manitoba) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a ground out.  Josie Peterson (Jr. Lakeville) followed with a single that scored a run to give UMC a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, Augustana responded with a leadoff triple, and after the next two batters were hit by a pitch, they had a single that scored two runs.  A third run scored on an error to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Augustana hit a two run homerun and two pitches later they followed with a solo home run to take a 6-1 lead.  Several batters later, Augustana singled to score a run for a 7-1 lead.

Augustana added another run on the with an rbi double in the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead.  They added another run in the fifth inning with a double followed by an rbi single for a 9-1 lead and the game was called because of the run-rule.

UMC only had three hits in the game.

 

GAME TWO
Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run.  They added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning.  The Vikings started the inning with a double and after a strike out the next batter singled to score a run.  The next batter singled to score a run.  The next Augustana batter lined out to the right fielder.  The next batter reached on an error and a run scored for a 5-0 lead.   After a single another run scored and the Vikings had a 6-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Augustana added another run in the fourth inning after a walk, hit batter and and an error for a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, UMC pitching had control problems and they walked three batters to load the bases with two outs.  The Vikings only needed one run to win the game and they got a single to score a run for a 8-0 victory.

UMC only had one hit in the game.

UMC drops to 8-30 on the year and 4-20 in the NSIC.  The Golden Eales will wrap up their season with four games next weekend.   Augustana improves to 36-4 overall and 24-2 in the NSIC.
