UMC VOLLEYBALL SHUTOUT BY WINONA STATE

The Winona State Warriors used a mixture of solid defense and some pretty good offense to beat the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team for a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16) victory in a Northern Sun match played in Crookston.

SET ONE –
Winona State jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the match. Winona State slowly built a nine-point lead at 21-12. UMC took advantage of three straight Winona State errors and got within a six-point deficit at 21-15. Winona State stopped the UMC run with a kill, but the Golden Eagles responded with two straight points with a kill from Lauren Wallace and a Warrior error. Winona State scored the last three points to win the set 25-17 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SET TWO –
The teams went back and forth early in the second set with ties at 2, 3, and 5. With the set tied at 5-5, Winona State went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-6 lead. UMC stopped the run, after a timeout, with a Deaira Gresham kill. Winona State continued to slowly build on their lead with a combination of outstanding defense and some solid defense for a 19-12 lead. The teams exchanged points the rest of the way and Winona State won the set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead.

SET THREE –
Winona State built a 6-1 lead to start the third set, forcing UMC to call a time out. The time out didn’t work as Winona State went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-2 lead. Trailing 15-5, UMC took advantage of three Winona State errors and kills from Sydney Krusselbrink and Sabrina Leuer to get within a 15-10 deficit. Winona State finished the set for a 25-16 victory to win the match 3-0.

UMC drops to 4-22 overall and 2-16 in the NSIC. Winona State improves to 20-6 on overall and 12-6 in the NSIC.
