UMC Volleyball defeats Bemidji State for third win in a row

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team defeated the Bemidji State Beavers 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 15-8) in an exciting Northern Sun Conference match played at Lysaker Gymnasium on the University of Minnesota Crookston campus.

FIRST SET
UMC started the match with a Maya Jones (Soph. New Braunfels, Texas) block. BSU responded by scoring four consecutive points before a Jones kill stopped the run. At 6-2, an excellent defensive play by Kaylee Waasdorp (Soph. West Fargo, N.D.) cut the lead to 6-3, and the lead stayed there until three consecutive Madison Carsten (Soph. Wadena) kills and two Jones aces gave UMC a 9-8 lead. UMC continued their run all their way to 12-8, an 8-0 run. BSU cut the lead to 12-10 before a Lexi Scharold (Fresh. Alexandria, Kentucky) kill made it 13-11. BSU responded with two points to tie the set at 13-13 before a Carizma Muth (Fresh. Randolph, Wis) kill made it 14-13. At 14 all, another BSU block gave them the lead, but Muth tied it with another kill. UMC then clung on to a one-point lead until the Beavers’ Zavda Priebe tied it at 17. The lead stayed tied until a successful BSU challenge made it 22-20. UMC battled back, and after two Jones aces, the set was tied at 23. BSU finished the set with two big kills to win 25-23, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SECOND SET
Bemidji State jumped to a 5-3 lead to start the second set. UMC settled in and responded with an 11-1 run. The run started with a Jones kill and an ace, followed by a BSU attack error, a Madison Carsten kill, and another Jones ace. After a Beaver point, Carsten and Muth had kills before a BSU attack error. Bailey Teveldal (Fresh. Baltic, S.D.) had a kill on a well-placed attack, which was followed by a Carsten ace and another BSU attack error for a 14-6 lead. BSU responded with three points before UMC countered with five more points after two Beaver errors, kills from Emma Malek (Soph. Plainfield, Ill) and Carizma Muth, and another BSU error for a 19-9 lead. BSU battled back to get within a 23-16 deficit before UMC’s Jones finished strong with a kill and her seventh ace of the match, tying a UMC program record in a match to give her team a 25-16 victory, tying the match at 1-1.

THIRD SET
Bemidji State jumped to a 7-3 lead to start the third set before UMC answered with a 9-0 run. The run was led by two kills each from Carsten and Muth, a Carsten ace, a kill from Scharold, and three BSU attack errors for a 12-7 lead. BSU stopped the run with a kill before UMC rattled off four more points with two BSU errors and kills from Muth and Carsten for a 16-8 lead. BSU settled down and responded with seven points in a row to get within a 16-15 deficit. The Golden Eagles stopped the run with kills from Malek and Jones before a Teveldal ace for a 19-15 lead. BSU answered and got within a 20-18 deficit before UMC’s Jones had a kill, followed by two BSU attack errors for a 23-18 lead. BSU continued to battle back and got within a 24-21 deficit before a BSU attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 25-21 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

FOURTH SET
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle with ties at 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. BSU went on a 5-2 run for a 19-16 lead. UMC was gifted a point on a BSU attack error only to have the Beavers score the next three points with two kills by Lily Riese and a kill by Rylie Bjerklie (Sr. Roseau) for a 22-17 lead. BSU gave UMC another point on a service error before they finished the set with two Bjerklie kills and a Kylie Struble ace for a 25-18 victory to force a fifth set.

FIFTH SET
UMC broke open a 1-1 tie with a 4-0 run with kills by Malek, Teveldal, an ace from Muth, and a BSU attack error for a 5-1 lead. BSU scored a point before UMC went on a 5-1 run with two kills from Carsten, a Jones kill, and two BSU attack errors for a 10-3 lead. The teams exchanged points before BSU went on 4-0 run with a pair of kills and two UMC attack errors to get within a 11-8 deficit. UMC had enough, and Muth dominated the rest of the way with some great rallies. Muth had a kill, Kailee Waasdorp served up an ace, and Muth finished the match with two big kills to win the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.

UMC improves to 4-8 in the NSIC and 7-13 overall and will take on Minnesota State-Moorhead on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at UMC. You can hear the match on KROX Radio. Bemidji State drops to 2-10 in the NSIC and 7-13 overall.
