UMC Volleyball Sweeps Mary In First NSIC Win

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team won their first Northern Sun Conference match of the year with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-9) victory over the University of Mary in a match played in Crookston.
The first set was tied at 5-5 when UMC went on a 13-0 run behind two Callie Schapekahm (Sr. Eagan) service aces, two Deaira Gresham (Soph. Maplewood) kills and two more kills from Lauren Wallace (Fresh. Bloomington) and the Golden Eagles led 18-5. UMC cruised the rest of the way for a 25-11 victory for a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, UMC jumped out to a 9-1 lead with Porsha Porath (Fresh. Windom) leading the way with four kills. The teams played even the rest of the way and the Golden Eagles won 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead.
UMC had another great start by jumping out to a 10-2 lead at the start of the third set. UMC had kills from three different players, two aces and the other five points game on Mary errors. With UMC leading 14-5 they went on a 7-0 run behind Kaitlin Sikkink’s (Jr. St. Charles) three kills and Gresham’s two kills for a 21-5 lead. The Golden Eagles finished the set strong and won 25-9 to sweep the match 3-0.
UMC improves to 3-12 overall and 1-6 in the NSIC. Mary drops to 3-12 overall and 0-7 on the year.
