The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Volleyball team beat Minot State earlier this season in a three-set sweep in the non-conference portion of the schedule. On Friday, they traveled back to Minot looking for their first NSIC victory of the season, however, it was the Beavers that came away with their first win of the season 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) in an NSIC match played at the Minot Dome.
First Set
Minot State started strong with three kills to start the set. After two errors and the first kill for UMC from Mara Weisensel (So. New Ulm), the Golden Eagles trailed 4-3. A kill and two errors on UMC opened up a 7-3 lead for Minot State. Then trailing 11-7, UMC grabbed their first lead of the set with a 5-0 run, on three errors and two kills from Bailey Schaefer (Fresh. Brandon). After two points to the Beavers gave them the lead, Schaefer got another kill to grab the lead right back at 14-13. However, Minot State finished the set with a huge 12-3 run to take the first set 25-17.
Second Set
Minot State again jumped out to an early lead in the set at 4-1. Schaefer notched two more kills for the Golden Eagles to keep UMC close at 5-3. The Beavers went on another big run of 9-3 to give them a 14-6 lead. UMC got a quick 3-0 run with kills from Schaefer and Lauren Wallace (RS Sr. Bloomington). However, two attack errors on the Golden Eagles aided a 3-0 run by the Beavers to get their lead back up to eight at 17-9. UMC would not go down without a late push with Weisensel adding another kill, as well as three more from Schaefer and back-to-back kills from Wallace as part of an 8-1 run to tie the set at 22-22. Yet, the Beavers finished on a 3-1 run to win the set 25-23.
Third Set
UMC was the team who started strong in the third set getting kills from Schaefer and Wallace to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Minot State answered with a 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead. That was followed by a 6-0 Golden Eagles run on five errors on the Beavers and another kill from Bailey Schaefer. But, like Minot State did all night, they answered back with a long 16-3 run to break open the set at 22-13. UMC got two late kills from Weisensel and an ace from Bojana Stekovic (Jr. Gornji Milanovac, Serbia), but it was not enough as they fell in set three 25-18 to lose the match 3-0.
The UMC Golden Eagles now fall to 1-16 overall and 0-12 in the NSIC. They will look for their first conference win on Saturday at the University of Mary.
Minot State picks up their first win of the season to improve their record to 1-17 overall and 1-11 in NSIC play.
