UMC Women’s Basketball Cruises In Exhibition Win Over Northwestern

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team used a strong second quarter to beat Northwestern University (St. Paul) 74-49 in an exhibition game played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.
UMC jumped out to an 8-2 lead with four points apiece from Isieoma Odor (Sr. Bloomington) and Paige Weakley (Jr. Kearney, Neb). Northwestern answered with six straight points to tie the game at 8, only to have UMC answer with eight straight points with two points apiece from Odor, Kylie Post (Fresh. Corcoran) and four points from Abby Guidinger (Waukesha, WI) for a 16-8 lead. Northwestern scored the final four points of the quarter and UMC led 16-12 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, UMC exploded for 25 points behind three Weakley three-pointers and the Golden Eagles took a 41-23 into halftime.
Northwestern started the second half with a basket before UMC answered with a 12-0 run behind six Odor free throws for a 53-25 lead halfway through the third quarter. The Golden Eagles kept the lead in the mid-20’s the rest of the quarter and led 59-33 going into the fourth quarter.
UMC played everybody that was able to dress in the fourth quarter and held on for the 74-49 victory to wrap up the exhibition season. “We didn’t have our best game, but we saw some good things today,” said UMC Coach Mike Roysland. “We need to do a better job of rebounding, but we have exhibition games for this reason to see what we need to work on and I liked the fact that we played hard and have some depth to work with this year.”
UMC was 1-1 in the exhibition season and will start the regular season on Friday when they play Nebraska-Kearney at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
