UMC Women’s Basketball finishes strong, but falls to UMary

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s basketball lost to University of Mary 68-54 at the Lysaker Gymnasium on UMC’s campus Saturday afternoon. UMary took control of the game in the 3rd quarter and never looked back.

FIRST QUARTER –
UMary scored first, but a quick three from Hope Dudycha gave UMC its first lead of the day about a minute into the quarter. The Marauders made it 4-3, but Dudycha tied it at 4 moments later from the free throw line. UMary would intermittently go up by a possession, but UMC kept it close, trailing by no more than 4 in the quarter. A 2 minute scoring drought in the end of the quarter was ended when UMary went up 14-11, then scored another bucket to make the lead 4. Emma Miller cut the lead down to three with a layup in the final seconds, making it 16-13 to end the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER –
UMary started the second quarter with a 7-2 run that spanned the first three minutes of the quarter. The Golden Eagles committed a few turnovers to help UMary build on their lead UMC would then score eight in a row to cut the lead to 7 with just two minutes left in the half. Miller scored six during the stretch, and moments later, knocked down a jumper to cut UMary’s lead to 5. Three more points were scored by the Golden Eagles to end the half. Nicole Hernandez was fouled during a layup and converted her free throw to keep it a one-possession game headed into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER –
 
UMC scored first in the second half with a Riley Jenkins free throw, but UMary scored the next 6. With the Marauders up by 8, UMC burnt it’s first timeout. Hernandez scored quick out of the break, which led to the teams trading layups over the next several possessions. UMary then went on a 9-2 run to give them a 49-36 lead. The Golden Eagles could not find an answer, and another late UMary run put the Marauders up 58-40 to end the quarter

FOURTH QUARTER –
UMary kept its foot on the gas with a three pointer to start the final quarter. UMC answered back with baskets from Hope Dudycha and Emma Miller. UMary went on another scoring run, this time outscoring the Golden Eagles 8-2 5o make it 68-46. Taryn Frazier and Halle Winjum scored the next eight to make it 68-54, but it was too little too late for UMC. The Golden Eagles finished strong despite the loss, outscoring UMary 14-10 in the final quarter.

UMC drops to 4-7 on the season.
