MSU-MOORHEAD WEARS DOWN UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN 83-65 WIN

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball ran out of gas and was outscored 23-12 in the fourth quarter in an 83-64 loss to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons at Nemzek Hall in Moorhead. 

FIRST QUARTER
The game was back-and-forth early on with ties at 4 and 7 before MSUM went on an 11-2 run taking an 18-9 lead with over three minutes left in the first quarter.  Emma Carpenter (Soph. Eagan) gave UMC a spark in the final minutes with a basket and Bren Fox (Jr. Norwood Young America) followed with two free throws.  After a Dragon basket, UMC ended the quarter with a Mary Burke (Soph. Virginia) basket to get within a 20-15 deficit going into the second quarter. 

SECOND QUARTER
MSUM started the second quarter on a 15-1 run led by Peyton Boom’s (Barnesville) seven points.  UMC battled back in the final five minutes of the quarter and ended the half on a 16-6 run behind Burke, Jess Mertens (Fresh. Devils Lake, ND), and Eden Golliher (Fresh. Iron River, Mich) to get within a 41-32 deficit going into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER
MSUM started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 48-32 lead, but once again UMC ended the quarter strong and outscored the Dragons 20-13 the rest of the way to get within an eight-point deficit (62-54) going into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
UMC spent too much time battling back in the second and third quarters and they were within five points (62-57) after a Fox free throw with 6:37 remaining, but MSUM dominated the rest of the way and outscored the Golden Eagle 21-7 the rest of the way and cruised to an 83-64 victory. 

UMC drops to 0-4 on the year and 0-2 in the NSIC North and they will host Northern State on Friday.  MSUM improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC North.
