UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HAS GREAT COMEBACK FALL SHORT AT MICHIGAN TECH

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team battled, but came up short in a 65-57 loss at Michigan Tech.

FIRST QUARTER-
Michigan Tech built a 13-6 lead in the first five-plus minutes of the quarter.  UMC started to heat up as Kylea Praska (Sr. Thief River Falls) made a three-pointer.  Michigan Tech responded with a three before Kylie Post (Sr. Corcoran) made a shot from the paint.  After another Michigan Tech three-pointer, UMC’s Mary Burk (Jr. Virginia) rattled home a three-pointer to get within a 19-14 deficit. In the final seconds of the quarter, Post stole the ball and scored on a layup to bring the Eagles within a 19-16 deficit going into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER –
The UMC Women have had a problem with a bad quarter in almost every game over the past two or three years and this game was no different as Michigan Tech dominated the second quarter and outscored UMC 19-9 to take a 38-25 lead at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER-
The Golden Eagles responded in a big way in the third quarter.  UMC trailed 42-27 one minute into the quarter when they went on a 16-3 run over an eight-minute span with six different players scoring in the run and the Golden Eagles tied the game at 45 with 19 seconds left.  Michigan Tech ended the quarter a three-point play to take a 48-45 lead into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER –
The teams exchanged baskets and UMC took the lead on a Bren Fox (Sr. Norwood Young America) three-point play for a 54-53 lead with six minutes let in the game.  Michigan Tech would retake the lead a few seconds later and held onto a 59-57 lead with 1:58 to go.  UMC’s offense sputtered in the final minutes and Michigan Tech made all four of their free-throw attempts on their way to scoring the final six points of the game to hold on for a 65-57 victory.

UMC drops to 0-3 on the year and will play Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan. Michigan Tech is 2-0 on the season with a couple of victories last weekend beating William Jewel College and Lewis University. The Huskies are the preseason favorite to win the Great Lakes Collegiate Conference!
