BEMIDJI STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOMINATES MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team shot just 27% from the field in a 72-50 loss to Bemidji State in an NSIC game played at Lysaker Gymnasium.

FIRST QUARTER –
Kylie Post (Soph., Corcoran) opened the scoring with a lay-up 26-seconds into the game, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. Bemidji State answered with a 7-0 run giving the visitors a 7-2 lead. Paige Cornale (Soph., Oak Creek, WI) stopped the run with a jump shot sparking a 10-0 UMC run for a 12-7 lead. Bemidji State responded with an 8-2 run to close the quarter, putting the Beavers in front 15-14. “We couldn’t get into any flow anywhere,” explained UMC head coach Mike Roysland. “We had all kinds of tipped passes and different things. I thought the opportunities were there in the first quarter. We just couldn’t find any rhythm.”

SECOND QUARTER –
Bemidji State opened the second quarter with the first 6 points increasing its lead to 21-14. A three-pointer by Mattea Vetsch (Fr., Devils Lake, ND) trimmed Minnesota Crookston’s deficit down to 23-19. UMC settled for just three free-throws during the final 3:52 of the first half as Bemidji State closed the half with a 10-3 run taking a 33-22 lead into halftime. “We had plenty of opportunities,” noted Roysland. “It wasn’t as if we were running the shot clock down by any means. We got the ball inside. Our bigs had all kinds of looks inside. You just can’t shoot that poorly and expect to win.”

THIRD QUARTER –
The Beavers started the second half with a 6-0 run increasing their lead to 39-22. The Golden Eagles failed to score a field goal in the third quarter for the first 6:07 of the second half before a Julia Peplinski lay-up brought UMC within 48-29 with 3:53 to play in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles closed the quarter with an 8-3 run pulling within 55-38 heading into the final quarter. “I was just hoping that somebody could give us a start,” added Roysland. “We were reaching up and down the bench to try and find somebody that could give us a little bit of a spark. We had a tough time finding that or anybody that could come off the bench and create some offense.”

FOURTH QUARTER –
Bemidji State scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter putting Minnesota Crookston away for good. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 26 points in the final 10 minutes as Bemidji State closed out a 72-50 win. “I’m really disappointed because our team is better than that,” summarized Roysland. “I’m obviously disappointed and they certainly are as well. We just failed in every aspect. We lost in every category tonight. Credit to Bemidji State.”

Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Friday night when UMC travels to MSU-Moorhead for a 5:30 P.M. tipoff on KROX. Bemidji State improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC.
