UMC Women’s Basketball Sign Four To NLI’s

The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team will welcome Emma Carpenter (5-10, Eagan/Eastview H.S.), Alyssa Peterson (5-7, Menahga), Mattea Vetsch (5-8, Devils Lake, N.D.), and Veronica Schwartz (5-10, Parkers Prairie/Parkers Prairie H.S.) to the team next year after she signed a National Letter of Intent. Carpenter is the first signee for the Golden Eagles in the 2018-19 signing class.

Emma Carpenter (5-10, Eagan/Eastview High School)
Carpenter helped lead Eastview High School to the 2017-18 Class AAAA State Championship. (Eastview Assistant Girls Basketball coach is Bree Zabel, a former Golden Eagle player) She was a 2017-18 All-South Suburban Conference selection. Carpenter earned All-South Suburban Conference Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore. She is a three-year letter winner in basketball for Eastview High School. She played AAU for the Minnesota Fury Elite program for five years. As a junior, Carpenter tallied 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. “Emma Carpenter is going to be an outstanding basketball player at Minnesota Crookston,” Roysland said. “Her court vision is off the charts. She makes everyone around her a better player because of her ability to see the floor. Emma also has great length and is great at getting to the rim. She comes from a great program at Eastview High School that just won the Class AAAA State Championship. We are very excited to add her into the fold and can’t wait to get her on campus next fall.”
Carpenter is the daughter of Scott and Paris Carpenter. She is undecided on her major at Minnesota Crookston. Carpenter was born April 19, 2001. She earned academic letters in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Alyssa Peterson (5-7, Menahga/Menahga H.S.)
Peterson was a 2017-18 Minnesota Class A All-State selection. She was named the Class A Breakdown Player of the Year. Peterson is a two-time All-Section pick. Peterson holds six school records at Menahga High School. She has scored 1,890 career points heading into her senior season. Peterson is a four-time letter winner for Menahga High School. She is a three-time All-Park Region Conference pick and has served as team captain. As a junior, Peterson tallied 20.5 points per game for the Braves. She was a 37.1 percent three-point shooter for Menahga High School. Peterson tallied five assists per game as a junior.
She is the daughter of Alan and Maggie Peterson. Peterson plans to major in elementary education. She was born July 10, 2000. “We are really excited to add a player of Alyssa Peterson’s caliber to our program,” said Head Coach Mike Roysland. “Alyssa has got phenomenal footwork that allows her to be an outstanding shooter. We are always looking out for the best shooters in the state and we think Alyssa fits that mold and will be a great fit in our system. Alyssa has a very high basketball IQ that helps contribute to her high level of play. We can’t wait to get Alyssa on campus in a Minnesota Crookston uniform.”

Mattea Vetsch (5-8, Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake H.S.)
Vetsch has helped lead Devils Lake High School to two state appearances. She is a 1,000 point scorer in her high school career, reaching the milestone Feb. 20, 2018. Vetsch averaged 15.7 points per game, six rebounds, three steals, and three assists for Devils Lake High School. She is a Second Team All-State pick, along with being an All-North Dakota State Tournament team member, and an All-Eastern Dakota Conference selection. Vetsch has served as team captain since her sophomore season. She earned the Firebird Award as a freshman and the Most Improved Player on varsity as an eighth-grader. Vetsch played on the AAU circuit for NDPro.
“We are very excited to add Mattea Vetsch to our signing class,” said Head Coach Mike Roysland. Mattea fits the mold of our program in that she is an outstanding basketball player that we think will help to continue to raise the level of this program. Mattea brings fantastic speed with the ability to shoot the three and attack the basket. She is also a tenacious defender that will help to lift the quality of our team defense. We can’t wait to get Mattea to Crookston and are excited to see the player she will become in a Minnesota Crookston uniform.”
She is the daughter of Joe and Lisa Vetsch. Vetsch plans to major in health sciences at UMC. She was born July 11, 2000. Vetsch is a member of the National Honor Society and student council. She also played volleyball, golf, track, and participated in cross country.

Veronica Schwartz (5-10, Parkers Prairie/Parkers Prairie H.S.)
Schwartz has been an All-Little Eight Conference selection at Parkers Prairie High School the last two seasons. She has earned the Most Improved Player Award twice and was her team’s Most Valuable Player, as well. Schwartz has also earned the Best Defense award and Hardest Worker award. She also competes in track and field. Schwartz averaged 14.9 points and 11.0 rebounds per game for the Panthers. Schwartz tallied 2.4 assists and 3.6 steals per game for Parkers Prairie High School. “We are excited to add Veronica Schwartz to our recruiting class,” said Head Coach Mike Roysland. “Schwartz is an all-around skilled athlete with a great upside as she continues to develop in our basketball program. She comes from a great program in Parkers Prairie High School and we are really excited to welcome Veronica into the Minnesota Crookston basketball family.”
She is the daughter of Steven and Dianne Schwartz. Schwartz is undecided on her major at UMC. She was born Aug. 19, 2001. She has been a Minnesota Honor Society for two years. She is an academic letter winner and has been on the “A” honor roll since the seventh grade. Schwartz is also a Knowledge Bowl letter winner.
