The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team continued their offensive struggles while only shooting 27 percent from the field and the Minot State Beavers pulled away for a 59-47 victory in a Northern Sun Conference game played in Minot, North Dakota.
FIRST QUARTER
UMC had a much better start to the game than they did on Friday night by taking a 4-1 lead with baskets from Mary Burke (Soph. Virginia) and Kylie Post (Jr. Corcoran). Minot State settled in and answered with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to take an 11-4 lead and the teams played even in the final minutes of the quarter and the Beavers took a 15-8.
SECOND QUARTER
UMC had a great start to the second quarter when the Division II Women’s Basketball steals leader, Jes Mertens (Fresh. Devils Lake, ND) stole the ball and it led to a Haylee Wheeler basket (Fresh. Lakeville) and that started a 9-0 run. In the run, Mertens added two free throws, and Julia Peplinski (Jr. Hutisford, Wis) added five straight points to give the Golden Eagles a 17-15 lead with six minutes left in the half. Minot State seemed to have an answer for every UMC run and that was the case in the second quarter as they responded with an 8-0 run to take a 23-17 lead with less than two minutes left and the Beavers took a 25-21 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
Minot State slowly built an eight-point (39-29) lead with three minutes left in the third quarter and they took a 43-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Minot State took a 47-35 lead to open the quarter before UMC put a 10-2 run together behind six points from Mertens and four points from Post to get within a 49-45 deficit with five minutes left in the game. Minot State built the lead back into double-figures and held on for a 69-42 victory.
UMC shot 27 percent (16 of 60) from the field and 13 percent (2 of 15) on three-pointers in the game.
UMC drops to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC North and will host the University of Mary on Friday, January 29. Minot State improves to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC North.
