The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball team trailed heading into the fourth quarter, but a strong final quarter game UMC a 77-69 win over Winona State in an NSIC matchup at Lysaker Gym.
FIRST QUARTER –
Winona State scored the game’s first points with a lay-up before the UMC tied it up with a jumper from Janie Tormanen. The Warriors went on a 7-1 run before UMC’s Hope Dudycha hit a three to make it 9-6.
The next few minutes were back-and-forth before the Golden Eagles tied it up at 14-14 with Nicole Hernandez a lay-up. Tormanen made a lay-up to take the lead and start a 6-2 run to make it 20-16. Winona State made two straight three-pointers to retake the lead before UMC scored the last five points of the quarter, including a Riley Jenkins three-pointer, to give them a 25-22 lead.
SECOND QUARTER –
UMC scored the first points of the quarter with a jumper from Emma Miller. The next minute was scoreless before Miller hit a three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 30-22 lead. The Warriors responded with a three-pointer before Miller hit another three-pointer to make it 33-25.
The following two and a half minutes were scoreless before Winona State started an 8-0 run to tie it at 33-33. UMC made a pair of free throws before the Warriors tied it up again at 35-35 as the team went into the halftime break.
THIRD QUARTER –
The second half started with neither team making a field goal for almost two minutes. Winona State hit a three-pointer to make it 38-36 before Dudycha hit a three-pointer to make it 39-38 Golden Eagles.
The Warriors took the lead with a lay-up before UMC retook the lead with another Dudycha three. Winona State immediately responded with a three to start a 7-0 run to take a 47-42 lead with 5:00 left in the quarter.
The teams traded lay-ups before neither team scored for two minutes. Olivia Walsh ended the drought with a lay-up, and the Warriors made a jumper to make it 51-46 Winona State. The last two minutes of the quarter were back-and-forth, with Jenkins hitting a three to cut UMC’s deficit to 53-50 going into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER –
UMC tied up the game 30 seconds into the quarter with a Tormanen lay-up. The Warriors responded with a lay-up before Hernandez hit a three to give UMC a 56-55 lead 1:12 into the quarter.
Winona State retook the lead with a jumper a minute and thirty seconds later, but Tormanen made another lay-up to give UMC a 59-58 lead with six and a half minutes to play. This started an 8-0 run for the Golden Eagles before Winona State ended the run with a lay-up. Neither team made a field goal for the next minute and a half before the Warriors hit a three-pointer to cut their deficit to 66-64. This was the closest Winona State got as Miller hit a three-pointer and Dudycha hit a jumper to go up 71-66 with 37 seconds left. Winona State did hit one more three-pointer before UMC scored the last six points of the game with free throws to win the game 77-69
UMC improves to 9-6 on the season and 6-3 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles host Minnesota State University-Mankota on Saturday at Lysaker Gym. Winona State falls to 4-10 on the season and 3-6 in NSIC play.
