UMC Women’s Soccer Falls to Southwest MN State

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) women’s soccer team tied their match against Southwest Minnesota State with their first goal scored at home this season in the first half before conceding two second-half goals in a 3-1 loss in an NSIC matchup played at the UMC Soccer Field in Crookston.
Southwest Minnesota State wasted little time opening the scoring with the Mustangs breaking through in the third minute of the match. When Abbey Hoisington (Fr., Chantilly, VA) received a pass from Lexi Smith (Fr., Dallas Center, IA) before lofting a shot over the head of Minnesota Crookston keeper Athena DiMario Done (Soph., Windsor, Ontario) giving SMSU a 1-0 lead. Eleven minutes later, Minnesota Crookston found its equalizer off a Mustangs’ turnover. Vanessa Shelton (Soph., Tacoma, WA) took possession for the Golden Eagles and fired an ambitious effort from the edge of the 18-yard box finding the back of the net tying the match at 1-1 just 13:27 into the match. “I think the ten minutes after the tying goal was the best spark we saw in terms of acting like we wanted to be there and wanted to win and that was encouraging for sure,” said UMC assistant coach Jordan Young. “I think (the goal) really came down to capitalizing off a turnover.”
In the second half, Southwest Minnesota State dominated possession and tallied 17 shots to just one UMC shot in the final 45 minutes leading to three second-half goals for the visitors. SMSU’s Abbey Hoisington took a pass from Cassidy Erickson (Soph., Lennox, SD) and fired a shot from 10-yards out into the net giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Late in the match, Alexandra Miskowiec (Jr., Andover) received an excellent pass from Abbey Hoisington (Fr., Chantilly, VA) into the middle of the box, blasting a low shot past the UMC keeper for a 3-1 lead. Southwest Minnesota State padded their lead late in the match with a final goal scored in the 89thminute when Alex Harmdierks (Fr., Victoria) finished off a distribution from Alexandra Miskowiec closing out the SMSU 4-1 win. “Honestly, a lack of desire,” explained Young of UMC’s struggles in the second-half. “We just need to figure out how to get that spark that we showed after our goal. They wanted it more than we did is what it comes down to.”
The Golden Eagles fall to 1-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in NSIC play. Minnesota Crookston continues returns to the field Sunday when UMC hosts Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
