UMC Soccer Plays to a Tie With Mary

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) women’s soccer team generated just one shot on goal in 110 minutes of soccer but utilized stringent defense and excellent goalkeeping forcing a 0-0 draw with the University of Mary Marauders in an NSIC match played at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, ND.
The University of Mary dominated possession in the opening 45 minutes. The Marauders held Minnesota Crookston without a shot on goal while managing four shots on goal at the other end of the field. Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Athena DiMario Done (Soph., Windsor, Ontario) played a perfect first half in the for Minnesota Crookston making four saves to preserve her shutout through a scoreless opening frame.
UMC acclimated to the cold, snowy conditions better in the second half. The Golden Eagles managed their first shot on goal while limiting the Marauders to only one shot on goal in the second 45-minute period. Both goalkeepers made their one necessary save to keep the match scoreless through 90 minutes sending the two teams to sudden-death overtime.
The University of Mary generated the only shot of the first 10-minute overtime period which UMC’s DiMario Done managed to save to keep the match scoreless going into the final 10 minutes of the match with a scoreless draw seeming imminent.
As the final moments of the clock dwindled, the University of Mary appeared destined to score a game-winning goal with just two minutes left in the match. A perfectly placed pass was sent into the 6-yard box where a wide-open Marauder’s striker took possession before striking a shot into the net, however, the clear off-sides positioning was spotted by the line-judge drawing his flag up and negating the would-be game-winning goal to preserve the scoreless draw until the second overtime period expired.
The Golden Eagles improve to 1-8-2 overall and 1-6-2 in NSIC play. Minnesota Crookston returns to the field on Sunday when UMC travels to Minot to take on Minot State at 1 p.m. The University of Mary improves to 3-5-2 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play.
