UMC’S PITLICK AND LONG RECEIVE BUTCH RAYMOND SCHOLARSHIP

University of Minnesota Crookston student-athletes Paige Pitlick (Jordan, Minn.) of the softball team, and Trevor Long, Jr. (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) as honorees of the sixth annual Butch Raymond Scholarship, sponsored by Sanford Health. The scholarship, which was increased to $240,000 in 2017-18, is divided among selected recipients at each of the NSIC member institutions.

The scholarship is in recognition of Butch Raymond, the NSIC Commissioner from 2004 to 2014.  For over a decade, Raymond led the NSIC from an eight team league to a 16-team super conference. During his tenure, the league won 13 team national championships while achieving a high level of academic success.

“Congratulations to the student-athletes who have dedicated themselves to excellence in the classroom and in competition,” said Sanford Health President and CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft. “Sanford Health is honored to invest in the next-generation of health care professionals through the Butch Raymond Scholarship. Butch’s service to the NSIC always prioritized the student-athlete experience, and it’s fitting his name be attached to this scholarship.”

Pitlick has a 3.79 GPA in health sciences and biology, with a minor in chemistry and biology. Pitlick has been a staple on the NSIC All-Academic team and on the on the Minnesota Crookston Deans List. Pitlick won six games as a junior in the circle for the Golden Eagles with eight complete games, a 4.70 ERA and a school-record 100 strikeouts.

Long has a 3.69 GPA in health science and biology. He has been a staple on the Deans List and NSIC All-Academic team for the Golden Eagles. Long has been an anchor for the Minnesota Crookston secondary. He was third on the team with 79 tackles as a junior. Long had seven pass break-ups on the 2018 season.

The scholarship is awarded to one or two student-athletes at each of the 16 NSIC institutions.  To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must be a senior academically in 2019-20, have a GPA of 3.20 or higher, be participating in intercollegiate athletics and plan to work in a health-related field or attend graduate school in a health-related field.  The student-athletes will be publicly recognized at a home athletic event during the 2019-20 academic year. 

Long and Pitlick join former Butch Raymond Scholarship recipients; Reed Hjelle (2018-19), Callie Schapekahm (2018-19), Kaycie Hagen (2017-18), Sierra Trost (2016-17), Katie Sheetz (2015-16), and Ashley Martell (2014-15).
