UMC Volleyball Falls Short In Loss to Winona State 

University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball won the third set to avoid a sweep in a 3-1 loss against Minnesota State-Mankato in an NSIC match played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.
In the first set, Minnesota Crookston jumped out to a 3-0 lead after kills from Lauren Wallace (R-Fr., Maplewood)  and Deaira Gresham (Soph., Maplewood)  followed by an ace served by Lauren Ulibarri (Jr., Flagstaff). Another Lauren Wallace kill made it 5-3. The Mavericks took five-straight points to claim an 11-9 lead following a kill by Morgan Olson (Jr., Annandale). Three-straight MSU-Mankato kills gave the visitors a 17-13 lead. The Mavericks kept their distance from the Golden Eagles the rest of the set closing it out with three-straight points to take set one 25-17.
MSU-Mankato started the second set by taking three of the first four points. A UMC service and attack error gifted the Mavericks a 5-2 advantage. UMC tied the set with three-straight points closed out by a kill from Porsha Porath (Fr., Windom) tying set two at 6-6. The Golden Eagles gained the lead with another three-point run including an ace served by Katie Lienemann (Soph., Rosemount). MSU-Mankato utilized a three-point run later in the set to regain a 16-15 lead. With the set tied at 19-19, MSU-Mankato took the next two points off a UMC attacking error followed by a kill from Morgan Olson to give the visitor’s a 21-19 lead. MSU-Mankato closed the match by taking 4 of the final 6 points to win the second set 25-21.
Minnesota Crookston looked determined to avoid a sweep on their home-floor in set three taking five-straight points to gain a 10-6 lead in the third set. A service ace hit by Deaira Gresham extended the points streak to six followed by a Callie Schapekahm (Sr., Eagan) kill to cap the seven-point run giving the Golden Eagles a 12-6 lead. Minnesota Crookston continued to impose itself in the third set closing it with a Lauren Wallace kill to giving Minnesota Crookston a 25-21 third set win forcing a fourth set.
In the fourth set, MSU-Mankato jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Back-to-back aces served by Mara Quam (Soph., Kenyon) gave the Mavericks an 8-2 lead. Minnesota Crookston took three-straight points later in the set to pull within 9-7. The lead was trimmed to 9-8 following a Mavericks’ timeout thanks to another Porath kill. Leading 13-12, MSU-Mankato rattled off three-straight points to pull ahead 16-12. The Mavericks continued to pull away in the fourth set with a four-point run giving the visitor’s a 22-13 lead. The Mavericks closed out the match a few points later with an Alivia Garbe (Soph., Maplewood) kill securing the fourth set 25-17.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-17 overall and 2-11 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court Saturday when they host #4 Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. MSU-Mankato to 14-7 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
