As one of the oldest operating theatres in the country, the Grand Theatre has a lot of history. The main theatre is likely one of the most unique in the country because other than some technology and seating upgrades it looks and feels much like one would imagine it did on opening night in 1910.
But the outside of the building is also a step back in time with the GRAND marquee from the 1970s. The theatre’s owner Brian Moore is working this summer to sand, paint and replace the lights to give the vintage marquee a fresh look. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do since I’ve owned the place,” said Moore. “I’m sanding and painting the GRAND letters on both sides of the marquee. I’m also putting new lights behind the letter board and hopefully orange neon around the front.”
Each letter takes between three and a half to four hours to sand and paint. Moore plans for the lights on the GRAND sign will be lit Friday and Saturday nights from about 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. and hinted that they might be lit each night of Ox Cart Days in August.
