Verona “Nonie” Skalsky – Obit

Verona “Nonie” Skalsky, 96, Ada, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Benedictine Care Community in Ada.

She was born to Claris and Olive (Loobey) Miller at their farm southeast of Ada. She received her early education at country school and graduated from Ada High School in 1944.

On November 4, 1944, Nonie married Bobby Skalsky at the First Methodist Church in Ada. They farmed in the Ada area for many years with Bobby’s brother Vernon, and his wife, Virginia “Ginny,” as the “Skalsky Bros.”

For many years Nonie was a homemaker and both her and Ginny served many meals to the men doing the fieldwork. In later years Nonie worked at Chi-Chi’s restaurant and then as a pharmacy clerk at both Ada Rexall Drug and Candy’s Drug. Nonie was known as “Orange Grandma” because she loved EVERYTHING orange, clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc.

When Bobby passed away in 2001 Nonie moved into the Thompson Apartments in Ada. She loved it there because she was close to two of her best friends, Dolly Merkens, and Renie Hovden. She felt truly blessed that Kelly Myers took such good care of all of them living there. For the last several years she had been a resident at the Benedictine Care Community in Ada. While residing there, she always said “I’m in the best place ever.”

Nonie is survived by her sister, Maxine (Ken) Milton, Las Vegas, NV; three sons, Dan (Mary), Kalispell, MT, Randy (Jane), Fargo, ND, and Kim (Renee), Casper, WY; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and special family friend, Val “Hoppy” Natwick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claris and Olive; husband, Bobby; daughter, Candy; and son, Eldy.
