Vincent Mendez – OBIT

Vincent Mendez 71, passed away peacefully with family and friends at his side at Maui
Hospice in Wailuku Maui, Hawaii on January 12, 2026. From 1980 until his passing, he
called Wailuku Maui home. Vincent is survived by his son Gabriel Mendez and his
Grand-son Alfie Mendez.

Vincent was born on March 4, 1954 in Tarrant, Texas to Ramona and Jesse Mendez. In
his early childhood, Vincent’s family moved to Crookston, MN. He graduated from
Crookston Central High School in 1972. He then joined the United States Army. After
serving his country, Vincent enrolled in the Nursing Program at the University of
Minnesota Technical College in Crookston, Minnesota. In the mid 1980’s Vincent
completed the Registered Nursing program at Maui Community College in Kahului
Maui.

Soon after completing the Nursing Program in Crookston, MN, Vincent moved to
Hawaii. Hin 1980 he started working at Maui Memorial Hospital and continued there
when they changed ownership to Maui Memorial Medical Center until 2025. He retired
a few years ago but still had a calling for the ER Psych Unit and he returned to work
there. Vincent also applied his nursing degree to work at Maui Community Correctional
Center.

Along with his passion for nursing, Vincent had a love for music and while being a full-
time nurse, he started selling records at the local swap meet that led him to open
Requests Music store on Maui, a business on Market and Main Street in Wailuku. He
sold his business a few years ago to focus on his family and his property management.
Vincent was a professional garage sales seeker. He was always looking for the next big
or small item!!

Vincent, is survived by his son Gabriel Mendez and Grand-Son Alfie Mendez (Wailuku
Maui). Sister, Alice Mendez Brown, brothers, Raymond Mendez, Kenneth Mendez and
Paul Mendez, and sister-in-law Bobbi Mendez. Vincent is also survived by many nieces,
nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many cousins. Vincent made many lifelong
friends on Maui and they are not forgotten as they were by his side as he journeyed
through his illness. Thank you to Janet, Mary Lou and Cindy for their unwavering
dedication to Vincent.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramona and Jesus Mendez, sisters, Eva Mendez,
Diane Mendez Hilterbrand and Raquel Mendez Hartley, brothers, Ruben Mendez and Angel
Mendez, and Jill Sherer (Gabriel’s mother).

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 7, 2026 in Wailuku Maui at the Cameron Center on
March 7, 2026

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to UH Maui Nursing Program
310 W Ka’ahumanu Ave, Kahului HI 96732-1617.
