Fertile Legion Baseball Post #238 tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning, but Wadena Post #171 pulled away the rest of the game for a 13-3 victory in five innings in the first round of the Northwest Substate baseball tournament in Fosston.
FIRST INNING
The first two Fertile batters were retired before Bryer Strem reached on a single up the middle. The next batter was retired.
Wadena’s leadoff batter, Henry Erickson, reached on an error and advanced to second base. Max Lake tripled to right-center field to score a run and came in to score on a Ben Kreklau groundout for a 2-0 lead. Carson Davis walked, stole second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
SECOND INNING
Kolby Hemmah reached on an error with one out before the next two batters struck out.
Wadena’s James Seelhammer was hit by a pitch and Erickson walked. The next two batters were retired.
THIRD INNING
Fertile’s Brady Bjerk singled, and after an out, Steven Sather and Teegyn Johnson were hit by pitches to load the bases with one out. Strem drew a walk to score a run. Caleb Sather hit a ground ball to the shortstop, and Wadena got an out at second base, and the relay to first was off the mark, and two runs scored to tie the game at 3-3.
Wadena answered in the bottom of the inning when Kreklau led off with a single, Davis and Kaiser singles to load the bases. Gunnar Ament hit the ball to center field to score two runs, and another run scored when the centerfielder overran the ball, and Wadena led 6-3. Another run scored on a Seelhammer groundout for a 7-3 lead.
FOURTH INNING
Fertile was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Wadena’s Lake reached on a fielder’s choice and with two outs, Davis singled to score a run for an 8-3 lead. Davis stole second base, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch for a 9-3 lead. Kiser and Ament walked before Haverkamp siingled to score a run, and Seelhammer knocked in a run with a bloop single to score a run for an 11-3 lead.
FIFTH INNING
Fertile was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
Wadena needed two runs to win the game and Snyder and Lake singled before Kreklau walked to load the bases. Davis singled to left field and two runs scored to give Wadena a 13-3 victory in five innings.
Fertile’s season ends with a 5-8 record. Wadena will play Ada in the second round at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in Fosston.
