Wal-mart to fight Polk County in tax court

The Polk County Commissioners met on Tuesday and approved the purchase of a used compost turner for environmental services at a cost of $298,500.

The Polk County License Bureau will be closed Wednesday (July 25) and Thursday (July 26) for training.  “We will be closed so the staff can attend state-mandated training in Bemidji as they are rolling out the drivers license modular as the new changes are coming soon,” said Michelle Cote, License Bureau Supervisor.
Judy Keesler is retiring from Polk County Public Health, so they will advertise for the position of Clerk Typist Cashier III after the commissioners gave approval.
The county is looking to hire a roster nurse for 19 hours a week according to Kathy Girdler, Polk County Public Health Nurse, who informed the commissioners about the Follow Along Program.  “It is offered through Polk County Public Health for children birth to three years of age,” said Girdler.  “It offers educational materials every four months in the mail and the goal is to let parents know if their child is playing, talking, moving, and behaving like other children their age, we send out mailings when babies are born and when we do home visits.”     Girdler said they have 300 children enrolled in the Follow Along Program.
Scott Balstad of Fosston came before the board to ask that they increase the 4-H position from 80 percent to 100 percent for 2019, the commissioners agreed to consider the request.

The commissioners went into a closed session to engage in confidential attorney-client communications and litigation strategy related to pending and threatening litigation matters involving ongoing Tax Court litigation with Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust including Polk County District Court File No.  60-CV-17-850.  Wal-Mart is following the lead of Enbridge Energy, who brought Polk County to tax court last year to fight what they feel is high property tax valuations.
