Warren-A-O Girls Basketball’s cruise by Stephen-Argyle

The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies jumped out to a 15-2 lead after making five three-pointers on their way to a 62-32 victory over the Stephen-Argyle Storm in the season opener for both teams at the WAO High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
The Ponies started the season with the hot hand from downtown as Macey Boe made two three-pointers and Annie Peterson added another for a 9-0 lead. After two free throws from Stephen-Argyle’s Ayla Woinarowicz, the Ponies responded with two more three-pointers, one from Reegan Mortimer and another from Boe, for a 15-2 lead less than four minutes into the game. Stephen-Argyle’s Emily Marquis and Woinarowicz to cut the Storm deficit to 15-6. WAO returned with a basket from Mortimer and two Boe free throws for a 19-6 lead. Stephen-Argyle answered with Jocelyn Groven’s basket to get within a 19-8 deficit halfway through the half. WAO responded with five points from Annie Peterson, a Markelle Pederson basket, two free throws from Mortimer, and a basket from Boe to cap an 11-0 run for a 30-8 lead. The Storm went inside to Woinarowicz, who made a basket before WAO’s Mortimer made another three-pointer, and Kenley Marquis added a basket for a 35-10 lead. The Storm outscored Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 5-4 in the final minutes, but the Ponies took a 39-15 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Stephen-Argyle’s Emily Marquis made two free throws to score the first points of the second half before WAO’s Ashley Narlock made two free throws, Boe scored on a layup, and Kenley Marquis converted a three-point play for a 46-17 lead four minutes into the half. The Storm answered with three points from Jocelyn Groven before WAO’s Markelle Pederson converted a three-point play for a 49-20 lead. After a Storm basket, Pederson had another three-point play, Boe and Mortimer added baskets for a 56-22 lead. Stephen-Argyle’s Groven made a three-pointer before the Ponies responded with an Ava Oberg three-pointer. The Storm’s Marquis made a basket before WAO’s Boe scored three points for a 62-27 lead with six minutes left and running time started. Stephen-Argyle scored the last five points of the game, and Warren-Alvarado-Oslo won the game 62-32.

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo improves to 1-0 on the year and will play at BGMR on Tuesday. Stephen-Argyle drops to 0-1 on the year and will host Goodridge/Grygla on Tuesday.
