WARREN-A-O PONY GIRLS BASKETBALL USES 15-0 RUN TO BEAT SACRED HEART

The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies used a 15-0 run in the first half to beat the Sacred Heart Eagles 37-23 in a game played in Warren.

FIRST HALF –
WAO started the game by winning the tip and getting a quick basket from Emily Pederson a few seconds into the game for a 2-0 lead. Sacred Heart responded with back-to-back Sydney Llyod baskets and Grace Vonesh capped a 6-0 run with a basket in the paint to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead with 15 minutes left in the half. The rest of the half belonged to WAO as Gracie Anderson scored to spark a 15-0 run over an almost 15-minute span for a 17-6 lead. Sacred Heart finally broke the run with two Llyod free throws with 2.3 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 17-8 going into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Sacred Heart had another strong start sparked by a basket by Lloyd and they slowly chipped away and got within a 21-16 deficit with 11:50 left in the game. WAO responded with back-to-back baskets from Emily Pederson. The senior guard attacked the basket and had two nice drives for layups to give the Ponies a 25-16 lead. With the Ponies leading 27-20, Annika Magnusson made a free throw and Pederson followed with another basket and WAO’s lead was back to double-figures at 11 (31-20) with less than six minutes left in the game. Sacred Heart answered with a Sophie Edavold basket and a free throw from Grace Vonesh, but WAO’s Gracie Anderson made a three-pointer to spark a 6-0 run to end the game and the Ponies held on for a 37-23 victory.

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo improves to 2-1 on the year and will travel to Goodridge-Grygla on Thursday. Sacred Heart drops to 1-1 on the year and will host Red Lake Falls on Thursday.
