The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo (WAO) Ponies used a balanced attack and opened up the 2022 Football season with a 56-14 win over the Laporte Wildcats in a game played in Warren.
1st Quarter-
Laporte got the football first, and after gaining one first down, the Ponies would force a fumble and take over in great field position. WAO would face a third and long, but it would be no problem as sophomore QB Kaden Pierce would deliver a strike down the sideline to Tyson Mortimer for a 26 yard TD score giving the Ponies an early 6-0 lead. The Ponies were far from done scoring in the opening quarter, getting another stop and adding a touchdown at the 3:59 mark on another TD pass, this time a 9 yard score to Derek Moehrle. The PAT would be blocked giving WAO a 12-0 lead. The Ponies were dominant on both sides of the ball, and after forcing another fumble, a couple of plays later they would get a 8 yard TD run from their FB Lawrence Matta. The PAT would once again be blocked but the Ponies had built up a nice 18-0 lead with 1:41 remaining in the opening quarter. Laporte would answer back with a quick drive of their own capped off by a 41 yard TD run by their leading rusher in the game Justin Clyde. They would go for the two-point conversion, failing and giving the Ponies an 18-6 lead after one quarter of play.
2nd Quarter-
The second quarter was much like the first, with the Ponies able to run and throw the ball successfully, making life miserable for Laporte. WAO would score for their fourth straight drive in a row with 8:29 remaining in the half, on a 31 yard TD pass to a wide-open Jackson Woinarowicz. It was the 3rd passing TD of the game from QB Kaden Pierce and after a successful two-point conversion, the Ponies were in front 26-6. WAO would force their third turnover of the game, and immediately strike again on a big 53 yard run from Jacob Rodriguez, which moved the ball down to the Laporte 1 yard line. Pierce would take it from their rushing up the middle for the score, and after another successful two-point conversion, the Ponies were in front 34-6 with 6:29 still remaining in the half. Laporte would work a nice drive at the end of the half down inside of the Ponies 20 yard line, but they would run out of time before they could score, giving WAO a 34-6 lead at the halftime break.
3rd Quarter-
WAO would receive the second-half kickoff, and score three more times in the third quarter thanks to a combination of run and pass plays. The scoring plays would be a 19-yard TD pass by Kaden Pierce (his 5th TD of the game) to Nate Sedlacek, a 5 yard TD pass by his replacement Adam Mcintyre to Derek Moehrle, and a 17 yard TD run by freshman Noah Sedlacek. That would give the Ponies a comfortable 56-6 lead heading into the final quarter of play. In all, the Ponies scored 8 TD’s in the game, and did a tremendous job of mixing up plays and getting multiple players involved.
4th Quarter-
In the final quarter, there was running time as WAO had eclipsed the 35+ margin. The Ponies used the opportunity to get some younger players in the game and saw some nice things from a young core group of guys. Laporte would continue playing hard as well and get one more score with 9:16 remaining in the football game on Justin Clyde’s second TD run of the game, this time a 19 yard scamper. The Wildcats would successfully complete a two-point conversion that brought the score to 56-14 WAO. The teams would trade possessions the rest of the game, and the Ponies would walk away with an impressive 56-14 victory in the season opener.
WAO improves to 1-0 on the season and will be back in action next week when they travel to take on the Northern Freeze on Friday night. Laporte drops to 0-1 on the season.
