Crookston’s Washington Elementary School has been hosting its annual Safety Town event this week. The program will run from Tuesday through Friday, meaning students will have four days of activities and safety knowledge.
Safety Town is a program for children who have recently completed Kindergarten and are moving on to first grade. 40 pre-registered participants attended the event.
This year’s Safety Town Coordinators were familiar faces to the program as Megan Parenteau and Stacy Olson ran it. Both Parenteau and Olson teach first grade at Washington Elementary and have been a part of organizing the Safety Town program for over a decade now.
Newly added stations at Safety Town last year were sports safety and pedestrian safety; both were back this year. Parenteau details the pedestrian safety station: “New last year was sports safety and the pedestrian safety simulation out on the sidewalk.” She continues, “We did actual pedestrian safety, so like here they are kind of doing it in a simulation, but yesterday the gals that were here walked them down the sidewalk to the end of the street and practiced looking left, looking right, then looking left again.”
Other stations Safety Town puts on include-
- Animal Safety
- ATV Safety
- Bus Safety
- Bicycle Safety
- Boat/Water Safety
- Fire Safety
- Gun Safety
- Playground Safety
- Train Safety
- How & When to Dial 911
As mentioned, Friday, June 7, is the final day of Safety Town, which includes guest speakers and graduation. During the graduation ceremony, all participants will receive a graduation certificate and a graduation cap. A reception will follow the ceremony.
Both Parenteau and Olson wanted to thank the many community members who helped put on Safety Town throughout the week. Over 40 businesses and organizations contributed to the program this year. Some sponsors for the event include Safe Kids Grand Forks, Polk County Public Health, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the CHS Leo Club, and the Crookston Police Department.
