WAYNE STATE SWEEPS UMC SOFTBALL IN FINAL GAMES OF THE SEASON

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Softball team’s season wrapped up with two hard-fought losses to the Wayne State College Wildcats by 8-6 and 4-3 scores in Northern Sun Conference games played in Crookston.

GAME ONE – 
UMC took a lead in the bottom of the first inning when Maggie Morales singled to score a run and another run scored on an error for a 2-0 lead.   Wayne State cut the UMC lead in half with an rbi single in the top of the second inning.
UMC added four runs in the fourth inning after back-to-back singles and an error loaded the bases.  Allison Martinson doubled to center field to clear the bases and UMC took a 5-1 lead.  
Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth inning and Wayne State exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning behind six hits and three costly UMC errors for an 8-5 lead.  
UMC tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with an rbi double with two outs, but that is all the Golden Eagles would muster and Wayne State won the game 8-6.

GAME TWO-

Wayne State opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.  Neither team scored until Wayne State added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning after a double and another two-run home run for a 4-0 lead.  UMC answered in a big way with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning.  Leah Macias and Haley Strachan led off the inning with back-to-back singles and after Hannah Macias was hit by a pitch the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with nobody out.  Malia Pula had a big single up the middle to score two runs and Rocky Bjorge followed with another single to score a run to bring UMC within a 4-3 deficit. 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, UMC loaded the bases with two outs, but grounded out and Wayne State held on for a 4-3 victory to complete the sweep.

UMC’s season comes to an end on a 19 game losing streak and they finish the season 13-41 overall and 2-28 in the NSIC.
