The Crookston Pirates entered the Rumble on the Red Wrestling Tournament with four in the varsity division while putting 10 in the junior varsity division because of the huge number of wrestlers in the meet, billed as America’s largest high school wrestling tournament held at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, N.D. “
Varsity –
In the Varsity level, Zach Brown lost his first match of the day in a tough 4-3 decision and lost by pin in the fifth-place match to finish sixth at 120 pounds. “Zach wrestled well in the first match of the day, but just came up a little short,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “He ran into a couple of very good wrestlers and finishing sixth place is a great honor for him and he had some great matches this weekend.”
On the Junior Varsity side, the Pirates had three that made the medal round and placed.
Braxton Volker who won all five of his matches on Friday to reach the championship match where he was pinned early in the second period. “Braxton had a very good tournament winning five matches,” said Coach Hanson. “It was a tough loss in the finals, but overall it was a great tournament for Braxton.”
Cam Weiland at 132 pounds was 5-2 in the tournament and lost a tough 3-0 decision in the third-place match to finish fourth place. “To place in this tournament is pretty special,” said Coach Hanson. “Cam had a great two days and had a very good tournament.”
Nolan Dans had nine matches in the two days finished 6-3 and losing the fifth-place match by pin. Nolan had won six matches in a row before losing his final two matches of the tournament. “He had a lot of great mat time this weekend,” said Coach Hanson. “He was able to win the close ones and it was a great tournament for Nolan.”
The first trip to the Rumble on the Red tournament was a success according to Coach Hanson. “We got a lot of wrestling in this weekend and we saw some great competition,” said Coach Hanson. “I am thinking we won more matches than we lost so that was good and we wrestled some people that we haven’t seen before and the guys competed well so it was a good weekend.”
The Pirates are off for the rest of 2019 and will be at the Mahnomen-Waubun Team Dual Tournament on Friday, January 3 to start the new year!
