#1 RANKED WARROAD SHUTS OUT PIRATE BOY’S HOCKEY

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team battled tough with the #1 ranked team in the state, the Warroad Warriors, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors showed just how talented they are winning the game 7-0. “Really proud of our effort tonight,” said Pirates coach Josh Hardy. “We were able to withstand a ton of pressure from arguably the best team in the state and hang in there.”

FIRST PERIOD –
Warroad would outshoot the Pirates in the opening frame 18-3, but early on Crookston was able to keep the game tied at 0-0. “We executed in the neutral zone well and frustrated them at times,” said coach Hardy. “Jaren (Bailey) stood on his head and battled like a true senior leader all night.” Warroad would score their first goal of the game as Murray Marvin-Cordes was able to beat Bailey at the 5:05 mark of the period to make it 1-0. A few minutes later is when the Warriors started to break it open with back-to-back goals in the span of fifty-four seconds to take a 3-0 lead. They would add one more goal late in the period with just nine seconds remaining and skate off to the locker room with a 4-0 lead over the Pirates at the first intermission.

SECOND PERIOD –
The Pirates came out in the second period and just like the first, were able to contain Warroad and keep them off the scoreboard for the first fifteen minutes of the period. “We had some heroics in the second period from Jackson Demarais to save a sure goal,” said coach Hardy. He was able to dive and stop a wrap around so that was great to see.” Crookston would go on the Power Play late in the period, but unfortunately for the Pirates, Warroad would score two shorthanded goals in twenty-three seconds to take a 6-0 lead. “Jack (Doda) went down hurt on the Power Play and was limping back to the bench when they scored the first one,” said coach Hardy. “The rest of the guys were waiting for a whistle so that was a tough break. Thankfully Jack ended up being okay after the period break.” Scoring one of the goals was Jayson Shaugabay who just recently broke T.J. Oshie’s (NHL star and Stanley Cup Champion) school record for all-time points. The two goals gave Warroad a 6-0 lead heading into the final frame.

THIRD PERIOD –
The third period was played with running time per Minnesota State High School League rules as Warraod led by 6+ goals. The Warriors would add one more goal in the final period and end up winning the game 7-0. Warroad outshot Crookston in the game 48-6. Jaren Bailey as coach Hardy mentioned had a solid performance saving 41 shots while allowing 7 goals. Ben Norris started for Warroad and got the shut out win saving all 6 shots he faced. “Overall really proud of our effort,” said coach Hardy. “Told the boys before the game that I did;t care what the score was. I just wanted to see us perform to our potential and we were close to that tonight.”

Crookston drops to 2-11 and will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Thief River Falls to play the Prowlers. Warroad improves to 13-0 with the win.
