The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis squad was ranked fifth in the state coming into the state tournament and were facing the #10 rankedProvidence Academy Pirates, which is located in Plymouth. Crookston won two singles matches and lost two doubles matches in three sets and lost to Providence Academy 5-2 in the first round of the state tournament at Reed Sweatt Tennis center in Minneapolis. In the consolation semi-finals, Crookston had to play #3 ranked Pine City and lost ?-? and was eliminated.
CROOKSTON vs PROVIDENCE ACADEMY
Providence Academy came out strong and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when they won the first doubles match over Emma Osborn and Emma Gunderson. Crookston came out slow and lost the first set 6-0, but bounced back and played much better in the second set but came up short 6-4.
The second match completed was the first singles match where Providence Academy’s Annika Harberts Ott beat Hayden Winjum 6-2, 6-1 to take a 2-0 lead.
Crookston won the next two matches to even the team score at 2-2. Abby Borowicz won her fourth singles match 6-4 in the first set and played even better in the second set to win 6-2.
Halle Winjum was the second Pirate to earn a victory as she cruised to a 6-1 first set victory and won a hard-fought second set 7-5 to tie the match 2-2.
Third singles was the fifth match completed with Providence Academy winning the first set 6-2, but Crookston’s Brekken Tull battle back and just came up short and lost in the second set 7-5 to give Providence Academy a 3-2 lead in the match with the second and third doubles matches remaining.
The second doubles team of Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clausen lost their first set 6-2 and shook the nerves out before they started the second set and bounced back to win 6-2 to force a third set. In the third set, Providence Academy battle back to win 6-1 to win the match with four victories.
The last match on the court was third doubles and Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson. The lost the first set 6-1, but bounced back to win the second set and since the team match was already decided they went to a third set tie-breaker. Crookston trailed 3-1 and won the next two points to tie it at 3-3. The teams exchanged points and were tied at 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, but Providence Academy won the last two points to win 14-12 to win the match 5-2.

Audio PlayerCrookston drops to 15-4 in duals and will play Pine City at about 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. tonight in the consolation semi-finals. Pine City lost to Litchfield 4-3 in the first round of the state tournament. Providence Academy improves to 16-14 on the year and will play in the semi-finals vs Litchfield on Wednesday.

CROOKSTON vs PINE CITY –
The first match complete was first singles with Pine City’s Ella Sell, who is the #5 ranked player in the State Individual Singles tournament cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead to start the match.
The next match complete was the first doubles match as Crookston started slow again 6-1, and played better in the second set but lost 6-4 and Pine City took a 2-0 lead.
Pine City took a commanding 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at second singles.
Crookston picked up a win at third doubles as sophomore Morgan Nelson and senior Hannah Lindemoen won 6-1, 6-3. Lindemoen finished her high school tennis career with a victory at state and to keep Crookston’s chances alive.
The next match complete was third singles and Pine City solidified the team victory with a win at third singles. Crookston’s Brekken Tull played well and lost a tough first set 7-5 and then lost in the second set 6-3 to give Pine City a 4-1 lead with two matches remaining.
The final two matches ended up going to third set tie-breakers at fourth singles and second doubles.
At second doubles, Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clausen went to a third set tie-breaker for the second straight match. They lost the first set in a heart-breaker 7-5, but bounced back to win 6-3 to force a third set even though the match was already decided. They battled back-and-forth and came up short 10-7 in the third set and lost.
At fourth singles, Abby Borowicz won the first set 6-4 before losing the second set 6-4 to force a third set tie-breaker. In the third set, she came up a bit short in a 10-7 loss and Pine City won the match 6-1 to advance to the consolation championship against #2 ranked Rochester Lourdes.
Crookston ends the season with a 15-5 record and their 13th trip to a state tournament. Crookston will have two doubles teams of Hayden and Halle Winjum and Emma Osborn and Emma Gunderson starting the individual tournament on Thursday.
